As a parent of two talented but not elite level boys, I can assure you they all develop differently (even when closely related).
Some are perfectly comfortable relocating away from home whilst others are not.
The Eagles will due their due dilligence on any player they are considering drafting from interstate and would not risk having a restless, high draft pick.

The Eagles' first Pick 1 this century is worth more than anything they could trade it for - here's why

West Coast (and now Freo) are experienced in developing and retaining youngsters from the East.
There’s a long list of success stories and a short list of failures.
I don’t have a clue whether Reid is the best choice for WCE but the club gets most of these decisions right.
I’m looking forward to a positive 2024 – we may not make finals but we wont be far away.

The Eagles' first Pick 1 this century is worth more than anything they could trade it for - here's why

It’s easy to say player A should be in and player B should be in but you have to take someone out to make room.
So, to fit Dusty in, who are you taking out (and why?).

Wings take flight, 'flat out error' on Dusty, veterans snubbed: Winners and losers from the 2023 AFL All-Australian team

Got my wires crossed and thought this game was on tonight.
I like the lineup – I probably wouldn’t have picked Stoinis but 3/18 off 3 is a great return. He seems to do enough to keep his spot.
I’m pleased Matt Short got an opportunity to play – his ability to bowl a change up over or two should not be under estimated (and he’s a good fielder).
Like many others, I have been a harsh critic of the Aussie selectors and whilst their hand was forced into these selections, I think this is a good group in this format.

Spinner's stunning debut, Marsh magic lead Aussies to crushing win over South Africa

You’re obviously talking test cricket here?
I like that lineup – it gives us plenty of benefits over the previous top 6.
L/R combo to open.
Green recognised for his technique – get him in early and let’s see him build some big scores.
Splits up Labs and Smith – I’m not convinced Smith likes batting with Marnus.
Makes 5&6 pretty explosive if we get off to a good start but both have the experience to knuckle down and bat with the tail if need be.

Spinner's stunning debut, Marsh magic lead Aussies to crushing win over South Africa

It’s interesting that there’s 3 night games in the first week of finals – presumably for television ratings. The lowest ranked game will be on Saturday afternoon yet that’s a similar time to the Grand Final.
I would be interested to hear from Victorian residents as to what the ideal time is for a game on a Saturday night.
I find it strange that the AFL only scheduled 5 Saturday night games at the MCG for the whole season (I count the two 4.25pm games as twilight rather than night games as they were early in the season – rounds 1 & 3).
Is there no appetite in Melbourne for Saturday night fixtures at the MCG?

AFL News: Weitering learns fate for Greene incident, star Tiger's AA snub, finals week 1 locked in

Yes, surely everyone would need to play everyone else once before you could adopt this.
Even then you could argue that it wasn’t a level playing field. For example: Brisbane playing Geelong in Geelong is not the same as playing them in Brisbane.
The system might work well with a smaller league where everyone plays each other 3 times. You could implement the system after everyone has played each other twice.
So, let’s set up an 8 team super league with 21 rounds.
Seriously, it would be better to have everyone play each other once (17 rounds). Then a new set of fixtures with the bottom 6 to be fixtured against each other for the last 5 rounds. The highest ranked of those 6 get the number 1 pick.
I know it’s been suggested by someone else before and it’s not going to get support from the AFL (for lots of reasons).

No more rewards for losers: The solution to the AFL's tanking problem

There is an obvious question missing here.
When?

Aussies' double injury blow as Smith, Starc ruled out of South Africa tour, Marsh to captain

I’m getting a bit old but qualify under the M rule.

None of the obvious contenders to replace Dave Warner stand out. So why not try a left field solution?

“Carlton’s bid for a ninth consecutive victory has been helped by the early return of Harry McKay.”
I’m not so sure about that.
Harry has been terrible in front of goals this year with less than 40% accuracy. He has kicked just 26 goals in his 17 games so far this season – these stats compare poorly to other players.
Maybe, Carlton are better without him?
Will Carlton trade him?

I wonder if teams will start to innovate with captaincy (or maybe they already have?).
Perhaps, you could have one captain solely focused on the bowlers and bowling changes. This would allow him/her to be thinking ahead of the game without having to worry about whether the fine leg should be up or back.
The second captain would be focused solely on field placements to complement the bowler selected.
Of course, the bowlers and captains would have preset plans that they would tinker with during the game and this may require consultation. However, most of the time they would understand what they had planned and the execution of these plans might be made easier with two leaders on the field.

Cummins set to skip South Africa tour instead of risking wrist - and backs Marsh to shine as white-ball skipper

You’re probably right Gilberto. It is hard to find the logic sometimes as there is rarely any explanation. Perhaps the players are told but the selectors don’t explain themselves very well.

Marsh worth a try not only as T20 captain but ODI skipper after World Cup as West looks best option for future

I guess the 4 day games are to see how some of these guys play at a slightly elevated level. No need to test out Labs, Renshaw and Murphy as we know what they can do. Likely that Labs and Renshaw would dominate the game and therefore reduce opportunities for others to shine. So, I see the logic.

Marsh worth a try not only as T20 captain but ODI skipper after World Cup as West looks best option for future

The WBBL made the decision a few years ago not to play on full sized grounds (for obvious reasons). This had a profound effect on the spectator acceptance of the game as scores increased from around 100 per 20 overs to 150+.
AFLW refuses to reduce the ground size and we will continue to see games of 3 goals something to 4 goals something and spectators wont sit through that for long.
The dilemma for AFLW is that they want to play in the big stadia but can’t drag in a paying crowd. So every game is run at a significant loss.
Time for them to bite the bullet and take the game to the suburban grounds and bring the goals and the boundaries in.
If the average AFL player kicks the ball 50m and the average AFLW player kicks the ball 40m, you need to reduce the playing field by 15-20%.

TOM MORRIS: The AFL's hierarchy is in shambles - and it's nothing less than a failure of governance

Thinking about the World Cup a little more. There will be no need to go too heavy with spinners as these will not be test match burners – they will be mostly flat tracks and most suited to the skiddier bowlers.
I’m not convinced Cummins is the right man to lead our team in 50 over cricket – he struggled against England’s attacking batsman and I’d be keen for someone else to lead the team.
Subject to everyone being fit, my 15 man squad would be:
Batsmen
Smith
Warner
Head
Marsh
Maxwell
Hardie – ahead of Green and Stoinis
Bowlers
Abbott
Agar
Ellis
Hazelwood
Starc
Zampa
Keepers
Carey
Inglis
That’s 14 so room for one more. I think it needs to be a batsman and I’d opt for Turner.
Some might say I’ve forgotten Cummins. No, I think he should not be in the squad – unless you leave out Abbott. In my view, Starc, Hazelwood and Ellis must go so it comes down to Abbott or Cummins (unless you leave out a batter or the second keeper).
I’d expect most games to be high scoring matches (300+) so it will be tough on the bowlers – no matter who they are.

Marnus dumped, Cummins injured, new captain named, uncapped quartet called up as selectors launch new white-ball era

Agar is injured.
Turner is the best T20 captain in Australia and could easily justify a spot in the side – especially as he is now back bowling.

Marnus dumped, Cummins injured, new captain named, uncapped quartet called up as selectors launch new white-ball era

Obviously not a BBL fan BG?
He bowled quite well in the last BBL but not good enough to qualify to play for Australia.
I think it was 9 wickets for the series – well behind Abbott, Neser and Behrendorf.
T20I are a complete waste of time outside of the World Cups.

Marnus dumped, Cummins injured, new captain named, uncapped quartet called up as selectors launch new white-ball era

“All the best cricket I have seen was with lower over rates.”
Seriously?
Some of the worst cricket I’ve seen is with players wasting time and bowling significantly less than the 90 overs a day.
Time wasting is done by both batting and bowling sides and the ICC needs to fix the problem before it kills test cricket.

There's an easy solution to 'Ball-change-gate' - and fixing it could also solve Test cricket's biggest problem

I agree but I’m not sure how you can stop someone from asking. Is there a 5 run penalty for asking for the ball to be changed?
The problem with the ball changes and the slow over rates actually comes down to the same thing.
The umpires do not have sufficient authority over the players.
When presented with the ball, Joel Wilson could easily have said to Stokes, “Nothing wrong with it, get on with the game and stop wasting time.”
We appear to have meek and mild umpires (and administrators at the ICC) who are afraid to stand up to the players.
Fines for slow over rates are completely ineffective. As I suggested a while ago, the fielding side should get one warning then have a player removed from the field for a period of time if they are short the required overs in a session.
No changes of batsmen’s gloves – except at an official drinks break. No one should come onto the field without the umpires approval.
The ICC and the umpires need to regain control of the game. At the moment, the players control almost everything and the umpires are afraid of upsetting them.

Love it Georgie – except the last line.
Baseball is dying (and I’ve never liked the sport anyway).

'I'd have shaken your arm off for 2-2': The Pommy and the Aussie on ties, moral victories and who'll be left in 2025-26

Four games were close but that’s about it.
The boring tactics of constantly bowling short and setting negative fields did nothing for me.
Stokes was just as bad but had a few funky field placements to make it look like he was being innovative.
Stokes failure to declare after lunch in Manchester was about as far away from positive cricket as you could get. Every Anglo Saxon in the world knew it was going to rain for a day and a half.
England scored at 5 an over for most of the series but that is not why I watch test cricket.
After Lyon went down, there was no spinners of note (no disrespect to Murphy as he hardly got a chance).
Both teams made dumb selections – England continuing to stick with Anderson and Australia with Warner were the two most obvious. Neither team taking a risk with a different option for key positions.
As for the Aussie batsmen – all bar Khawaja underperformed on wickets decent for batting.
We knew 6 tests in 6 weeks(?) was going to be tough and Cummins and Carey looked the most cooked by the end. In hindsight, it would have been wise to give them both a break mid series – especially at 2-0 up.

Sounds about right to me.

AFL News: Verdict in for Suns skipper on Zorko squirrel-grip, Hinkley defends Power doctor over concussion controversy

I’m about as far away from a Richmond supporter as you could get. However, I think they will always consider Hardwick as a legend of their club. With support from Brendon Gale, he turned the club around from a perenial failure to the best team of their era.
Why shouldn’t he cash in?
I just think he’s going to the wrong “coast”. We could give him the same money and another 12 months in Italy!

I don’t know whether Ricky would make a great coach. I don’t rate McDonald but he has mostly got the results.
However, Ponting would make an excellent Chairman of Selectors. Bailey has been useless and has shown a complete inability to make the tough calls – Ponting would live up to his nickname (but with a different interpretation).
So, a simple change in my view. Sack Bailey, insert Ponting.
Dave Warner would announce his retirement within 48 hours.

The best coach for the Australian cricket team was at the Ashes but in the commentary box

Doesn’t sound right to me BG.
For a Cricket Board (or club) to have the control over replacement balls seems amateurish at best and certainly open to abuse.
It still comes down to the umpires who could have sent the whole box back and asked for a more “used” set.
If there is some quirk in the rules that doesn’t allow the umpires to send the box back, then the ICC is responsible and England have cheated. One could even suggest they had two sets of balls – one for the home side and one for the away team.
