Yeah, 50 is too many, but I do not think Harris, Bancroft, and Renshaw should be written off after 14 tests. Bancroft and Harris world be getting close to their last chances though

None of the obvious contenders to replace Dave Warner stand out. So why not try a left field solution?

Langer, Hayden, Steve Smith, and Steve Waugh all averaged less than 30 after 13 tests.

Nick has previously made the comment that Warner averaged 37, I think, in the Shield when he made his test debit. People ruled out Harris for the Ashes because he *only* averaged 38 in the Shield last season. Labuschagne averaged 25 in the Shield in the last season before he was recalled to the test side. The standards that people expect of players that are outside the test team are often much higher than the standards that were met by some of the players in the team.

Marsh had underwhelmed at test level too.

Maybe Essendon’s list just isn’t that great.

Is it really happening? Could St Kilda and Essendon finally be legitimate contenders?

It makes sense for the same person to captain the T20 and ODI teams in my opinion.

Cummins set to skip South Africa tour instead of risking wrist - and backs Marsh to shine as white-ball skipper

I think Cummins, Smith, and Paine having similar records reflects Cummins having captained a greater proportion of his matches against significantly better opposition. Three of Cummins four away series have been against countries to whom we had won a combined two test matches in nearly 20 years before he became captain. His other away tour was in a place a place where we have had more success but still not won a series in 20 years. I think Tim Paine won just two overseas tests during his whole captaincy. These were against an English team that had lost to the West Indies, and failed to beat Pakistan at home, in its previous two series. Cummins encountered an England that had won 14 of its last 16 tests and not lost a series in 18 months. Cummins drew in Sri Lanka whereas Smith lost there 3-0 as captain. We also got flogged at home against South Africa with Smith as captain. Tim Paine could not beat India in Australia but Cummins beat them at a neutral venue. Cummins won a series in Pakistan. No other captain has won an away test, let alone a series, against Pakistan since Steve Waugh. Australia’s next seven tests are at home against Pakistan and the West Indies, and in New Zealand. If he wins all of those tests, which is plausible, his win percentage will be over 75%.

Cummins is proving a successful captain - but how is the job affecting his own stats and those of his teammates?

Labuschagne gets a chance to maybe make a late run for the world cup squad.

Marsh worth a try not only as T20 captain but ODI skipper after World Cup as West looks best option for future

Langer never won an overseas series, not even against Bangladesh. McDonald has won one, against tougher opposition.

Khawaja should be in the one day squad. He probably will not be at the world cup but should be close to being in the squad deserves a chance to push his case.

Australia A squad announced: Bancroft, Marnus get chance to press selection claims after snubs

Ha. Last night he took three wickets and conceded just one run from 3.2 overs.

Marnus dumped, Cummins injured, new captain named, uncapped quartet called up as selectors launch new white-ball era

I think he did not play at all last year because of the broken leg but would be captain otherwise.

He has captained the Melbourne Stars for years. Generally does a good job I think. I agree that he is too old though. He should be retiring from ODI cricket after this world cup so I suspect a new ODI captain would be needed in a few months if Maxwell was to take over the ODI captaincy. That would not be ideal.

is his batting… good enough to command a spot long-term” Yes. He is four years younger than Finch was last year. Giving a 31-year-old captaincy should not be a problem. In white ball cricket Marsh and Green can definitely play in the same team.

Only played four red ball games I think though. It looks like he played in the Hundred so maybe he did something impressive in that?

Great suggestion.

There's an easy solution to 'Ball-change-gate' - and fixing it could also solve Test cricket's biggest problem

I like the clock idea for the bowling side with punishments like free hits for the ball not being bowled in time. For the batting side I do not think there needs to be any punishments. Just allow the bowler to bowl the ball even if the batsman is not ready. A batsman getting bowled because they have not taken their guard would be the punishment.

The are a couple of comments here saying that getting rid of ball changes would tip the game more in favour of batsmen. While this true it is not a reason to dismiss the idea. There are other things that could make the game more balanced like making batsmen use bats like the bats that were around decades ago.

Cummins’ decision was not looking too bad when we were 0/140 in the fourth innings. Arguably he read the pitch right. The pitch, if anything, was better for batting on day four than it was on day one. It took England getting two new balls in 30 overs to bowl us out.

The first three words of the article are “Coach Andrew McDonald” not “assistant coach Andrew McDonald“. He was the T20/white ball coach at the time. McDonald won the Shield twice in three seasons and won the Big Bash in his only season in that. He also won the Marsh cup. For sure Voges has an excellent resume too, better than Langer’s and Ponting’s, but his record is not really better than McDonald’s. I am not saying McDonald’s record is better either. They both have really good records in the domestic competitions and I do think that you can really say that Voges has “achieved far more than McDonald“. McDonald obviously could not win the Big Bash twice as Voges has done because he only coached the Renegades for one season. McDonald also only coached Victoria for three seasons compared to Voges coaching WA for six seasons.

A drawn series is obviously better than a lost series. A series lost 2-1 is obviously better than a series lost 3-0 and a 2-2 record against a team away from home is obviously better than a record of two wins and four losses against that same team at home. Again, we had away series against Pakistan in the UAE. We never won a single test match, let alone win a series, there in around 20 years before McDonald took over. We had a series against Pakistan in England too and did not beat them there either. I think you are playing dumb to discount the results that McDonald has obtained.
Call it whatever you like. His results are exceeding those of the previous coaches of the last 15-20 years.

He drew in Sri Lanka after we were flogged there 3-0 in our previous tour. The 2-1 result was as good as we have done in India since 2004. In almost every series he is matching or exceeding Australia’s best results of the last 20 years.

“He hasn’t done anything his predecessor didn’t” Oh yeah, he won the WTC, Langer did not even make the final. McDonald had a much more difficult path to the WTC final too. Langer had one away series against an England that could not even beat the West Indies, or Pakistan at home. McDonald had three away series, against Pakistan, India, and Sri Lanka, against whom we had won a combined two tests against away from home in the previous 20 years.
