There wouldn’t need to be an AA team if it was a sport played internationally – it would just be the national team. Ultimately it’s a recognition of excellence among the players in the league, and it’s a fairer assessment across the different positions than the (notoriously mid-heavy) Brownlow. I’m sure it doesn’t mean nearly as much to players as a premiership (even though the same number of players win a premiership each year as are selected in the AA team), but it’s good to recognise players who excel even when their teams don’t.

Wings take flight, 'flat out error' on Dusty, veterans snubbed: Winners and losers from the 2023 AFL All-Australian team

I remember the media in the UK during Euro 2020(1) – they were naturally focused on the important issues of the day, chiefly PM Johnson’s relaxing of COVID restrictions, and the papers certainly didn’t cover their front pages with pictures of the team, in victory or ultimate defeat.

UK View: Piers Morgan, Ben Stokes take swipes at Matildas in Ashes 'revenge', England praised for 'dark arts' mastery

Were you in Australia during that series? Broad didn’t cop any more than the other English players, it was a beat-up by the tabloids (owned by the same bloke who runs most of them in the UK). Manufactured outrage, nothing more.

There might be 1 million girls and women playing football there (even that might be a stretch), but there are only about 5 million women between the ages of 18 and 30 in England, and one in five isn’t a professional footballer.

If he’s celebrating winning a battle of wits with Davey Warner… 😂

By the time England tour Australia again they won’t have won an Ashes match in the country in nearly 15 years 😁

The bloke isn’t too bright.

I can see how he would be bitter with his lot, having to go through life with a face like a boiled ham.

Fowler seems to just know where to be – it took some great defending and more than a slice of luck for France to keep her from scoring (she must have had half a dozen shots on target).

The Great Vine: Cortnee fires Matildas through to first ever semi-final after epic shootout win over France

I was worried that Arnold might drop her focus after that miss, and that it was a risk for her to take the kick, but not for a second – she did an awesome job.

An entirely fair point. And marginally lower than his away average.

'I'd have shaken your arm off for 2-2': The Pommy and the Aussie on ties, moral victories and who'll be left in 2025-26

There’s already a bat template – overall length not greater than 965mm, overall width not greater than 108mm, overall thickness not greater than 67mm, edge thickness not greater than 40mm.

As for the ball, the Duke seems to be a piece of junk, agreed.

India also have the firepower on flat pitches if a pitch does become docile.

Warner improved his average in England, remarkably (25.74 before the series, 28.50 during).

It wasn’t a mistake not taking Morris, he had a flare-up of a back injury in late April and couldn’t play (no bowling at all for four to six weeks following the injury, managed return to bowling following scans at that point).

Flem's Verdict: Stokes’ spirit of cricket goes out the window over catch while ICC needs to sort out ludicrous ball-swap farce

I honestly can’t see it happening this year. The last two games we just haven’t had the attacking fluidity of earlier in the season, we’ve looked stilted and haven’t been able to break through the competent but hardly outstanding defences of Essendon and GWS.

Race for the eight: Every run home analysed - here's how your team makes it to September

Yeah, that right is accompanied by a responsibility to critically examine his own form and realise that there is a point where he needs to cede his spot for the betterment of the team.

Otherwise we’re going to have Albie Cummins addressing the press at his first press conference as the new Australian captain, explaining that while Davey might look at bit out of form at the moment, and hasn’t passed 50 in the last twenty years, he’s hitting them well in the nets.

Maxwell smart left-field option worth considering for a spin if Aussies want to strengthen lower order all round

Maybe work Bryce Street or Ashley Chandrasinghe in there, someone who can get a sprightly 30 off 60 overs.

Or bowling bumpers at a bloke on one leg?

COMMENT: Cummins failed the moral test and tarnished these Ashes. He had the chance to be a legend and blew it

He’s said since then that he has “grown” and wouldn’t do that any more 😂

I don’t know whether the sanctimonious expectation that everyone should be on the same path to Bazlightenment is more galling than the hypocrisy…

It’s like the bleeding Alamo with some of you guys 😂

That Marnus *should* not make again, but he has the occasional space-cadet moment, so you can’t be sure 😂

But isn’t careless and carefree the vibe of Bazball? 😂

COMMENT: Cummins failed the moral test and tarnished these Ashes. He had the chance to be a legend and blew it

There’s an interesting discussion about this on Geoff Lemon and Adam Collins’ podcast (they are firmly on the side of it being a legitimate dismissal and the uproar being ridiculous and hypocritical). They talk about the cricket culture here being more uncompromising – that it was absent-minded sloppiness on Bairstow’s part and he deserves to pay for that – while in England the lower levels of the game are not played very seriously and they see Bairstow’s actions as unintentional and therefore undeserving of the penalty of losing his wicket. Which I guess is fine for village cricket, but not when you’re playing at an international standard.
