Can Greg turn the ship around? NSW 2023-24 squad preview
There’s a lot of criticism on the NSW Cricket Facebook page about pathways players getting endless chances to prove themselves (and mostly failing) at the expense of the guys who have more of a grounding in grade cricket. Whilst WA has a bubble of great talent moving through maybe NSW is having a lean patch re talent. As other posters hear have shown the migration to other states of NSW players has continued so there’s no easy answers. But if your captain is an ex test player and is averaging less than 30, well….

Mickey Edwards turns 29 this year and has taken 14 wickets in 8 first class matches. There’s nothing there that screams “Pick me” I hope he makes a go of it in England but times running out

I believe if you finish tenth you get relegated to second division?

We were lucky not to finish seventh last year.

A really good piece The tagger, I think you are pretty much on the “money” which to some extent is what’s driving the change. If it ends up with only the big three playing tests then to my mind it’s effectively over. Part of the appeal is the varied conditions you face touring other regions and to be recognised as the best you have to show some capability in all.
How long is it before a nation like South Africa for instance calls a halt to its domestic first class cricket as if you are not scheduling the playing of tests then why are you funding a loss maker like a lengthy four day competition?
The 2005 Matthew Engel quote about “no added colouring, no added flavouring, no added sugar” always makes me smirk, they obviously don’t count Murray’s Mints amongst that.
The death of Test cricket, and the Australian summer, is nigh
Fair call, it’s always a gamble, whilst we need an opener with the rest of the batting line up settled, “if” Labuschagne was to open then I feel theirs an opportunity to pick the best of the younger players (<23) to start the renewal which is speeding up on the test team. We've had the same problem for quite a while now re no Shield batsmen putting pressure on the test incumbents to keep their spots.
None of the obvious contenders to replace Dave Warner stand out. So why not try a left field solution?
I would like to see Wyllie be given a go in that sort of circumstance 👍, even if it doesn’t work out initially he’ll be all the better for it. We need some younger long form players to emerge/ be given a chance.

Marnus opens, so who’s at 3? Fill one hole by creating another. 👎

The poms like to chase in the last innings. Chappelli’s first rule of captaincy: Do what the opposition wants least.
Is the Australian Test side set up for success over the next four years?
Punter named Doug the rug at a press conference for “hitting the wall” during a match, (Adelaide IIRC), ie, not being fit enough, I’d certainly never heard a captain single out a player for underperforming so openly. Plenty of batsmen get out for low scores. There was a big falling out between Hauritz and Punter on an Ashes tour, can’t remember all the details, certainly a bit of blame both ways, But even Swann couldn’t believe we went into a game without Hauritz as up to that point Hauritz had been out performing him.

Yep, he’s said repeatedly he doesn’t want it.

Doug Bollinger and Nathan Hauritz say hi.

On his podcast sometime before the last test Peter Lalor said he’d been told by someone very close to the English team that fines for slow over rates would be covered by the ECB. I wonder if there is a similar arrangement with CA? If so we shouldn’t be too surprised if the players don’t care about completing the overs in the allocated time. 😡

Jeez, imagine getting a ball change and they gave you one with more bounce than a 14 year olds! 😛
Test-mortem: Bazball ultimately a little too reckless against Australian crawl - Where Ashes was won, lost and drawn
Exactly Rowdy and I think more of the criticism for Stokes is for going for the review, but without knowing for sure what he was checking on I suspect they were going for a possible pad/glove which would have had Smith out LBW. Not if the catch was completed which by Stokes reaction he knew it wasn’t.
Flem's Verdict: Stokes’ spirit of cricket goes out the window over catch while ICC needs to sort out ludicrous ball-swap farce

Yep, Smith averaged 45 in the shield season before he made the test team.

Here’s hoping England can win even one game away! Winning to nil gets boring.

And how many tests in Australia since? At least we can draw 2 series away and England would have lost 5-0 last series in Australia if it wasn’t for……..the weather.

Congratulations to England, well played, we gave ourselves a mountain too big to climb to grab victory.
For the last 3 tests they have been the better team as our shortcomings which were there at the start of the series remained, if Smith didn’t get the runs then ultimately the team couldn’t cover for him.
Maybe Khawaja can escape that criticism but the rest simply didn’t do enough.
The bowling was at times very poor and that wasn’t down to bazball, execution was inept. We need to get a young bowler or two ready for rejuvenation of the cartel.
As far as the captaincy goes, that will be difficult, it’s not that we lost as Ponting and Clarke also led failed campaigns, more the manner which underlies the problem of picking an inexperienced captain, hard enough for a batsman let alone a bowler. I suspect that he only way it will change is if Pat stands down, if the selectors won’t drop Warner then they won’t be lightening Cummins load.
Once again, well played England.
