Jadeja should play in the top 6 and Ashwin must play. He is a better bowler than Unadkat and Shardul in any conditions. Jadeja is not a Test class spinner in SENA countries and he should be considered as a batsman who is potentially a partnership breaker.

He was a failure if you’re judging him by the standards of the batting lineups of the Waugh and Ponting teams. But if you judge him from the line ups of what came after 2011 then, he should have played at least 50 more Tests than he has.

The trouble when you speak out is that a couple of failures and you’re out…you toe the line and don’t say too much, then you’re allowed a number of failures.

Applies in all walks of life.

I think Langer leaving was probably more important. Yes he scored twin tons but he has scored runs before and been dropped a couple of matches later.

His face didn’t fit…or more appropriately, his mouth didn’t fit in the Langer regime.

Kohli’s looked plumb as well and he thought so as well and yet there was only red on review.

Never really trusted ball projection…anywhere.

Recollections vary! Gavaskar tailors his words according to his audience..Viv and Greenidge have been quite open about the abuse including racial abuse they received in Aus in 1975-76 and how it toughened that team up.

The difference is that post WSC, channel 9 coverage was so much better and you saw what was happening on your screen close up which never happened before. Lillee, Marsh and to a lesser extent, Lennie, Hoggy became poster boys to this sort of behavior.

Fatigue, business interests, whatever the reason…the fact that is he avoided touring for the last 5 years of his career.

If the best Aussie batter and captain today were to pull out of tours as often as he did AFTER WSC, would that be acceptable?

Sorry but it was Lillee and Marsh who really started it. Let’s not forget that Lillee once kicked an opposition batter on the field of play. And his mates who had to sit in to judge him fined him $200 and blamed the other guy!

Show me one instance where that has happened in the last 30 years?

They were great players but they and others of that generation have created a tale that they always played hard but fair and their mates in the media especially the Packer empire helped to polish that bit of mythology.

Yes but they repeatedly missed tours after 1979, not before.
In Australia, people only cared how the Aussie team did at home and in England. Some attention was paid to touring the W.Indies but no one cared about their performances in India or Pakistan…and players missing such tours wasn’t such a big deal.

Amazing! Australia loses a couple of Tests in India and suddenly, we are being told that they aren’t worthy to be in the same breath as legends like Dennis Lillee and Greg Chappell among others.

Yes, the same players who never played in India! Yes there was WSC at the time but there were a few tours of Pakistan and Lillee went on one and did poorly and avoided the next one. Greg C did better on his one tour and also avoided the next one.

Reality is if these heroes would have probably avoided touring India if given half the chance only to wait until the home series when they could fill their boots.

And yes, lets not forget how they pumped up their stats at home vs Pakistan knowing that they had no intention of playing the next series vs WI.

Oh yes, they were so much better behaved, weren’t they?

To be fair, they haven’t said anything like this about the current players..just some of their shortsighted fans.

A bit of context here…they were at a low when Langer took over because their 2 best batters were banned. They still had an outstanding bowling attack.

They then proceeded to lose away in Pak and at home to India in 2018-19 before easily winning at home vs SL.

Their best 2 batters come back from suspension and then they draw a series in England who were missing their all-time great bowler…some good results at home follow until another home defeat vs India before thrashing England at home.

From what I see, Langer did good PR work but the main impetus for the improved performances were Smith and Warner coming back.

Don’t understand the talk about DRS… 3 reviews and retaining on umpire’s calls seem a good idea.
I do agree that players should remain in their positions for not out reviews.

I’ve got to say but I think that this game is in the balance and with the weaknesses of the Indian top order, Aussies might even be slightly ahead.

Looking like an interesting game and I don’t get the negativity.

BTW, if we want to talk about bad behavior then I think the person who really started it on a broad scale and gets almost no attention is Dennis Lillee. He was a fantastic bowler and charismatic personality and appears to be a good sort off the pitch but his behavior especially in the immediate WSC days was downright disgraceful at times.

This happened when channel 9 had the rights and his behavior was broadcast all over the nation and contributed to the toxicity which followed as not only was it never punished but it was actively defended and even laughed off on many occasions.

I have never seen a player kick another player on the pitch but Lillee did it.

I have never seen a player throw up his hands at his captain and walk away on the field but Lillee did it.

I have not seen a player since give numerous interviews and write books complaining about his captain and teammates while still playing and yet Lillee did it.

And this is what we saw…God knows what we didn’t see. Fast bowlers are a strange breed but he influenced a generation of poorly behaved Aussie bowlers including Lawson, Hughes, McDermott, McGrath and Warne…Warne was punished severely after some shocking behavior on his first tour to SA and pulled his head in.

And I’m not even talking about the lesser known bowlers like Simon Davis and others who could barely bowl but their main aim was to show how they could mix it with the abuse.

Let’s put the blame where it belongs.

Interesting to read the comments and also revealing how stories and myths have spread over the years.

Firstly, I don’t think that Smith was being friendly to the opposition but just being himself. If I had to theorize, I have read a lot about how Smith approaches a net session with the same intensity of being out in the middle and it wouldn’t surprise me if he instinctively thought he was having a net and behaved accordingly. No big deal.

Border was just frustrated and probably regrets what he said. Ironically he was far more friendly to the English in 1985 and 1986-87 when Aussies were getting thrashed. There were pics of him laughing and walking off arm in arm with Gower at the end of the day with England 1/300. It wasn’t a secret that he had more in common with his opponents than his younger teammates…he changed his behavior by 1989 but it was mostly harmless stuff in both instances.

Hello? What is this? The last century? Almost every point you’ve made is incorrect…India has won the last 2 series in Australia which means that they must be doing something right against the pacers and their spinners must be ok.

If you’ve watched India bat over the last 10 years, you will have noticed them struggling more and more against spin bowling.

“Not culturally comfortable with aggression?” Ancient stereotype…guess you haven’t watched Kohli on the field? Or Jadeja? Or Siraj? Or Harbhajan? Or Ganguly?
