It should probably be called ‘doing a Don Fox.’

Or perhaps in the Australian context, ‘ doing a Willie Carne.’

No idea why you’re so touchy about this. It’s not a criticism – it’s just who you are. Embrace it, and rest assured I don’t take you seriously. Why would I?

I know all about what happened in the lead-up to the Broncos’ inception. Hence my questions about the inherent contradictions of supporting them, in addition to one of the class of ’33.

I’m quite certain I know a lot more about the history of rugby league in Brisbane and Qld than you do. I’m also quite certain that you’re not actually loyal to anyone or anything – you’re just consumed by your irrational fear and loathing of NSW.

I also have better manners than you. To wit, I hope you have a lovely evening and enjoy watching the Broncos in the finals.

Round 27 Team Lists Late Mail: Manu hamstrung, long list of stars resting, Papa's year over, Ponga races clock for finals

Well done Grits.

They’re now the 23rd unofficial champion in the history of the NSWRL/ARL/NRL.

The Wahs will have to make do with the actual championship. 🥊

Thank you for reminding me of that one – I thought I’d died and gone to heaven at the time, and we Saints supporters need all the good memories we can get right now. 😊

NRL Week 1 finals match-ups: Playoff fixtures LOCKED IN

Well yes, you dislike and distrust people from another jurisdiction – it shines through in most things you post. Ergo, xenophobic.

I do understand what happened to the Souths team of the mid-1980s and the participation of Brisbane teams in quasi-national competitions around the same time. Nobody ‘destroyed’ your team – they still exist after all. Are you really suggesting they (like everybody else) weren’t adversely affected by the Broncos reneging on commitments made regarding a revenue sharing scheme with the then-BRL clubs? If so, you’re in denial.

I began supporting St. George because I liked their team around the time I started watching rugby league, I Iiked particular players (Goldthorpe, Barnhill, Hardy, and later Mundine), I liked their jersey. I was vaguely aware that they’d provided opportunities to kids from around my local area (NSW northern rivers), and like a number of NSWRL teams at the time, they engaged with the area. There were no schisms, broken promises, betrayals or contradictions.

Am I justified in your righteous eyes, dear Rell?

Round 27 Team Lists Late Mail: Manu hamstrung, long list of stars resting, Papa's year over, Ponga races clock for finals

This is why I find it hard to understand how people who loved the old BRL, and who still support the remaining teams from the glory days who’re still around in the QC, can support the Broncos.

I get the ‘well, at least they’re one of us’, xenophobic bit you carry on with a lot, but the Broncos joining the NSWRL caused immense bitterness and schisms within Qld league, and ultimately meant that the old clubs didn’t benefit at all from the Broncos’ rapid rise as had been originally envisaged, with a couple of old clubs going to the wall and the others barely clinging on.

All eyes here will be on Redcliffe vs NZ – a chance for the newbies to win a title – albeit an unofficial and technically non-existent title – in their first season. 😊

NRL week 27 preview talking points: Although we've come to the end of the road… still, I can't let go

Surely he’s gotta go. Surely…

Then again, the awful Ángel Villar held the RFEF job for 20 years despite repeatedly demonstrating his unsuitability. The only way they got rid of him was when he got a job with UEFA.

“None could conclusively prove that Latrelles feet were in front of Illias.”

No camera or camera angle could ever conclusively prove or disprove anything, especially not at a small ground like Barlow.

All the rest is, as you allude to, noise.

'Frankly, it's rubbish': Annesley blasts criticism from fans over refs while giving bunker green light over dubious decisions

Yes, of course, but they still rely on images from the ground, and it’s impossible to create the same sight-lines/reduce distortion, or even have the same number of cameras, at Barlow Park like you can at Lang Park/Homebush, for example.

'Frankly, it's rubbish': Annesley blasts criticism from fans over refs while giving bunker green light over dubious decisions

Hear, hear.

Things are changing everywhere – Aussie rules is encroaching ever further north, like Fire Ants in reverse. 😊 It’s even played in schools (the horror!).

Football’s actually still quite early into its post-Crawford journey; there’s still lots left undone. What’s happening now was inconceivable 20 years ago. There aren’t many week-to-week football fans in my office, but I was involved in or overheard several conversations about Saturday’s game and/or the world cup generally today.

Code wars rage on despite Matildas mania

There seem to be an alarming number of people who derive absolutely no pleasure from rugby league, other than bleating and bloviating about referees and/or review mechanisms.

I wonder why games are refereed the way they are now, and why we have such a bloated and occasionally confusing review mechanism?

'Frankly, it's rubbish': Annesley blasts criticism from fans over refs while giving bunker green light over dubious decisions

Probably not with a skeleton crew in Cairns.

'Frankly, it's rubbish': Annesley blasts criticism from fans over refs while giving bunker green light over dubious decisions

Yeah, the war will rage on, infantile though it undoubtedly is.

It’s cultural and handed-down for a start. I only have to look at my own experience growing up surrounded by rugby league and football in northern NSW. Lots of folk were very suspicious of Aussie rules – it was somebody else’s game. I suppose I still think of it that way to some extent.

It’s encouraged, of course – for bragging rights, market share, clicks, kicks and so on.

There’s also a rich and fascinating (though not very healthy) history of one-upmanship between the rugby codes – it’s very rare for both to be in good places at the same time because for much of their respective histories they’ve been feeding off each other in one way or another.

King Wally's CTE diagnosis shows why league must make major rule changes to protect players from themselves

Actually, rugby league’s more anarcho-syndicalist in nature – it arose in a demarcation dispute between the English and Yorkshire rugby unions, which ended with the Northern Union essentially losing, but setting up their own competition anyway, free of the centralist authoritarian yoke of London.

You’d like league if you knew more about us.

Oh, and it’s now well established, as you know, that Marx was a lively but largely ineffective Football midfielder. 😊

NRL News: Bennett admits Dolphins have gone backwards, Haas waiting on Wallabies offer, Benji reveals Dally M pick

What makes you think they’re trying to establish the game in the US, Dumbo?

Right from when this was first mooted about 18 months ago, V’Landys and the NRL have made little attempt to pretend that this is about anything other than ‘wagering content’.

Apparently there’s a fierce battle raging between St. George Willawong and Brisbane Strikers, and there’s said to be several hundreds of dollars involved. 😱

Seems so.
