I agree on the proviso that the NRL and/or the clubs pay for the suburban grounds to be upgraded to a minimum standard. The poor old tax payer has funded 2 new rectangular stadiums in the last few years. There is an argument that all finals before the GF in Sydney should be played at these grounds.

On balance a higher finish should be a home semi but 13000 at Shark Park is a joke for professional sport.

I reckon the fines would be deductible so not as painful as you might think. Part of the cost of doing rugby league player business

Eight cockroaches in the starting thirteen? I’m surprised you haven’t made Freddy the coach.

Walsh & Haas in, DCE & Hunt out, Latrell, Foxx down on form: Selection dilemmas facing Meninga for Kangaroos' new era

Loving watching the Knights the past few months. I can’t help but think Ponga is absolutely carrying them. There 6,7 &9 would all struggle to make any of the other top 8 contenders.

Ponga and Walsh are the two dominant players at the moment for mine. They are such a danger with the ball and are subject to so much opposition focus they allow their team mates that much more space and time.

Round 26 Talking Points: JWH, Ricky and a few others a bit 'tired and emotional' as pressure of finals race hits boiling point

In isolation 6 weeks looks very harsh for JWH. The “headbutt” was as soft as they come. Perhaps a bit of karma given how close the line he has been skating the last few years.

Not sure how Jordan Ratana has avoided suspension the past few weeks. Perhaps Ricky could give us an explainer.

Round 26 judiciary: Waerea-Hargraeves whacked with huge ban, Horsburgh facing suspension, Staggs in strife

As someone earlier alluded to retention is easier than recruitment. Panthers and storm are not paying big money for recruits and their decisions are more around which players to keep. More often they are offloading very good players. Sometimes these players are not as good at different clubs for a whole variety of reasons. The fewer high end recruitment decisions a club makes the fewer they will get wrong.
Of the examples mentioned Schuster and Luciano at $800k (if true) seem to me over the odds.

Bang for your buck: Spending 'overs' on talent is simply bad NRL business

Excellent. Whatever my opinion about the relative merits of test v t20 the market speaks.

The players, even from the big 3, are making the rational decision to maximise their earnings and that means T20.

India and to a lesser extent Australia and England have reaped what they have sown in regard to the funding of the other test nations. Not the only reason for declining quality of the test teams in other countries but certainly a major contributor.

I don’t think test cricket will die in the next few decades but I can’t see a road back for improvement in quality for teams outside the big 3. That will feed in to further disillusionment with test cricket. Who can honestly say they are looking forward to the test matches in Australia this summer?

The death of Test cricket, and the Australian summer, is nigh

I’m interested in seeing what the figures are as a more of an academic exercise as to how with the same cap we can see the tigers roster vs the panthers roster. Not sure where I sit on actually publishing players salaries. On balance I’m probably against.

I have zero faith in the NRL auditors and don’t believe for a moment all payments are disclosed.

I would have thought a system proposed many years ago by Warren Ryan where players are allocated a certain value each season would work better than the current salary cap.

My salary (130k plus maybe 40k in benefits) is publicly disclosed in an annual report. I don’t care about this particularly but I understand others might have a different view.

Haas rejects Wallabies and Bulldogs to remain in Brisbane - mere minutes after TPJ quits to free up cap space

Agree the Tigers are having a good crack most weeks, certainly since origin. On balance I would be more disappointed if I was a dogs supporter this year than a tigers supporter given the respective rosters.

I just can’t understand how you let both your starting halves leave when there seems no short or medium replacements.

Benji taking reins early as Tigers make cut-throat call on Sheens: 'Suggestions about us knifing Tim are demeaning'

I don’t think it matters who coaches the tigers. They have a terrible roster and are losing both starting halves next year. They have one good front rower, one of the best hookers in the comp and a super promising winger and fullback. That’s it.

The tigers problems have many causes and I don’t think sacking the coach is really the answer.

You’re right.

I’d love to see salaries published. Let’s say Broncos spend 9% of their cap on each of Haas, Carrigan Walsh and Reynolds. That would be 36% of your cap on 4 players in a 30 man squad. You are either carrying plenty of minimum salary players or everyone else is on $300k a season.

I won’t argue about the current strength of Penrith juniors as I simply don’t know enough detail. Recent history suggests there will continue be more enough good players coming through when needed.

Perhaps you are right and there is an element of resentment in my comments. You could put together a side of ex Storm and exPanthers still playing and they would be a top 4 team. I can’t get my head around how these two clubs but particularly the Panthers are able to lose very good players year after year and still be at the top of the table.

They still have the best roster although they have lost a number of very good players in the last few years. Replacements have been exceptional without the usual 50 games in first grade to get up to standard.

Panthers are consistently retaining the best juniors. How this happens with a salary cap and restrictions around hoarding the best young players is open for debate. There may or may not be some rorting going on but in the absence of the fabled disgruntled former employee my guess is the Panthers will be at the top of the table for the next five years. No rebuilding needed.

He is an intimidating player who at his best is in the top handful of forwards in the game. Unfortunately he rarely shows his best and there is a big difference between his best and his worse. I reckon he would be a good fit for the Storm in 2025 if the boxing doesn’t work out.

Correlation doesn’t equal causation.

Cummins has not been the most inspiring captain in terms of his decision making although his own performances have mostly continued to be top rate. I think there are a multitude of factors which have influenced the performance of the other players.

Cummins is proving a successful captain - but how is the job affecting his own stats and those of his teammates?

Several issues here.

Firstly there may be a slight increase risk of high impact injuries on the returns from long kick offs. Whether this is much different to the far greater number of normal collisions we see in the run of play with the 10 metre rule is hard to say.

I agree with the comment above that short high kick offs create a different sort of contest and perhaps the increased risk of a different type of injury.

Finally league has an innate conservatism and most coaches seem unwilling to try different things unless they see it working elsewhere first. You could see this with the crawl towards short line drop outs over the past decade. It is often as easy for good teams to defend on your try line as it is 20-30 metres out and you have the benefit of contesting the line drop out which gets you the ball back about 30% of the time.

NRL should consider following NFL path on kick-off to reduce risk of concussions - and encourage unpredictability

I’m would be happy if the bunker was more willing to support the on field decision unless it is clearly wrong. If you need to look at a dozen replays to disagree with the on field decision that is just so frustrating for everyone involved.

'Frankly, it's rubbish': Annesley blasts criticism from fans over refs while giving bunker green light over dubious decisions

While you might not be in their employ the manufacturers of smokes, booze and possibly garages and swimming pools all have deep pockets and have and will be the subject of litigation for the unfortunate effects of their products. Whether this is always reasonable is a different question.

King Wally's CTE diagnosis shows why league must make major rule changes to protect players from themselves

Maybe cap the number of fines per player per season at say one or two and after that it is treated according to the pre-fines regime. None of these scenarios are perfect, including what I have suggested, however the game is not better off by serial offenders getting their third, fourth or fifth fines in a season for foul play.

Lucky Luai yet another example of NRL’s wobbly wheels of justice veering off track in search for consistency

Not sure how Wighton avoids suspension for calling the ref a cheat. There must be a chart at NRL headquarters which rates calling the ref a cheat being less offensive than profanity towards the ref, homophobic or racist comments, all of which are correctly worthy of suspension.

Round 24 Team Lists Late Mail: Panthers lose star duo, Verrills gone for 2023, Broncos get triple boost, Kris crossed off

I did’t think the ref was particularly bad last night. Both sides but especially the chooks were very cynical and clearly slowing things down whenever they were under pressure. Coupled with the whining about every decision to further slow things down. Why doesn’t anyone have a go at coaches and players who constantly flout the rules in the hope the ref will not continue to penalise them.

The send off was arguable. Brown really launched at Burbo and got him directly in the head. Maybe it could have the bin instead but in the end it made no difference to the outcome

Fans should get a refund: Refereeing de-Klein shows how far NRL's gone backwards since golden age of officials

What a ridiculous idea. The game is already skewed heavily in favour of the batsmen. Perhaps the batsmen should be forbidden from wearing protective gear that can damage the ball. No helmets would even up the contest.

Limit ball change requests to one or two per innings with any further ball change left in the hand of the umpires.

Maybe if you want to speed up the game stop the batsmen changing gloves every three overs

There's an easy solution to 'Ball-change-gate' - and fixing it could also solve Test cricket's biggest problem

What about run metres? For mine one of the most oft quoted but mostly meaningless stats going.

Complete nonsense: What are the NRL’s most overrated stats?

Few things I reckon. Can’t recall a single Government project on or under the initial cost estimate ever. Inflation in building materials probably also contributed. I also suspect the Vic Govt finances facing a ratings downgrade if they hosed nearly $10 bil against the wall . This would increase the cost of servicing the significant debt they already have . If I was a Vic taxpayer I would be bracing for more pain.

Let the sandgropers have it. They are swimming in cash.

'Incredibly embarrassing': Sports react as Vic government axes 2026 Comm Games hosting over $5 billion blowout

Clearly I’m one of those sicko’s. Not about the cream rising, this week is all about the scum at the bottom the cup. How about those Tigers? Having a Fulton and Robbie Farah at the club. Tim Sheens and Benji would be checking under their cars after training.
