I remember the teams doing the lap of honour on grand final day while holding the J.J.Giltinan Shield.

Lack of care factor over NRL minor premiership is embarrassing but almost impossible to solve perennial problem

They were my tip for the title at the start of the season too.

ANALYSIS: The worst collapse ever? Souths miss finals as Walker powers Chooks to famous win

I watched it many times but I didn’t notice Young looking directly at Cobbo but I don’t agree that he grabbed his left arm. Hardly any force behind his illegal touch. Still if that is the Escort rule as you posted I’ll have to read up on it.
I don’t know about some great injustice, but the rules of Rugby League are always changing, and players do jump for the ball all the time. The bomb is the reason for most of the obstructions in the game. The bomb is a reward for failure, it should be banned.

'I’m p--sed off that people aren’t doing their jobs properly': Ricky Stuart gives refs both barrels in epic press conference spray

He didn’t put himself in the way of a kick chaser, he successfully knocked the ball back to a teammate before Cobbo could catch it. If that’s a penalty, then the rule should be changed so that any kick from a bomb or line-dropout can be challenged or make the rule that I suggested to Fraser. That is, they should not be allowed to jump for a ball and block a defender.

1. Okay.
2. Yes, it was from a short drop-out. It looked like Hudson Young knocked the ball back to me.
3. If Hudson Young only had eyes for his opponent, how did he knock the ball back to a teammate? He wasn’t offside from the drop-out or it would’ve been a penalty under the posts so he successfully outclassed Cobbo in the air.
4. My argument was that bombs cause multiple obstructions, and any attacker can get away with obstructing a defender taking the bomb, as you said, by only having eyes for the ball while they take the defender out of play. They should not be allowed to jump for a ball and block a defender. That’s my rule change to stop this.
5. Kicks like Cleary’s to his unmarked wingers are rewarded with a try. They are deserving of a try whereas kicks to a defender should go unchallenged or be penalised.

Billy Slater’s take on it, that it was illegal for Hudson Young to put himself in a position where he could contest the ball, is ludicrous. Why shouldn’t Hudson Young be allowed to contest the ball?

That doesn’t disqualify him from questioning that penalty. I believe the referee made an error. There was no obstruction that I could see.

1. The commentators and the Canberra coach agree with me that it was an incorrect call.
2. Hudson Young knocked the ball back to a teammate, preventing Cobbo from catching the ball and no rule was broken. The referee made an error.
3. He didn’t obstruct an opponent. He beat Cobbo to the ball and he should not have been penalised. I’ve been a critic of the bomb for decades because there are always obstructions.

Any team that can’t score a try in the first five tackles doesn’t deserve anything more than a field goal. That would be a fair reward for getting into a position to kick a field-goal. Tries should never have been changed from three points. This reduced the value of the penalty and encouraged teams to hold down because the attacking team would not kick for goal. The restart rule would not be needed if the defence was penalised for holding up play.

I understand that Ricky isn’t everyone’s favourite but he was well within his right to question that penalty. Can anyone explain that escort penalty to me?

The Broncos look like winning the grand final, but that penalty was puzzling, to say the least.

when the NRL back the call, which again, was correct.
Are you talking about the bomb where Cobbo knocked the ball back to a Raider? I look forward to your explanation because I don’t think the NRL will bother because they don’t want to look foolish.

Hudson Young got in his way and made it impossible for him to get his left arm involved.
He knocked the ball back with his right arm and wasn’t impeded by anyone. The bomb is usually full of obstructions, but I couldn’t work that out. The commentators were puzzled too.

Young looks at Cobbo and runs between him and the ball.
What does that mean? Why is that a penalty?

Yes, the penalty where Cobbo jumps up and knocks the ball back was mystifying. Bombs are a blight on the game.

Yes, it is in ‘Rugby Football League – The International Laws of the Game and Notes on the Laws’. In Section 2 Glossary between ‘Tackle’ and ‘Touch-in-Goal’ it says :-
TOUCH-DOWN is the grounding of the ball by a defending player in his own in-goal.
Sloan may have been trying to pick it up, but he grounded it in my opinion.

The last try was a shocking error from the referees. The ball is dead when there is a touch-down so Sloane only had to touch it when it was on the ground in-goal. The referee should’ve ruled a line dropout. I would like to hear from Annesley about why that was not a touch-down as it is in the rules of Rugby League.

roughly 21 million of Australia’s 26 million inhabitants are from the three states and territories with NRL teams.
Victoria shouldn’t be counted as a Rugby League state because they have a team in the NRL.
Perth or the Western Reds should be the 18th team in the NRL.

PNG bid has potential but NRL can’t have further expansion without the three Rs - relocation, relegation or rationalisation

Messi is in a much larger group of players so there is no doubt his foot skills are superb.
In Australian Football and Rugby League there have been players that have shown amazing footwork.
1. Reg Gasnier played Rugby League for St.George, NSW and Australia and could play Rugby Union and Cricket. His running was described as graceful and his sidestep and swerve could be performed to leave defenders groping. He could also pass to his team-mates at high speed with great accuracy.
2. Brett Kenny played for Parramatta, NSW and Australia and could sidestep off both feet leaving defenders falling over. I once saw him do a triple sidestep, right-left-right, that put the defender on the ground as Kenny stepped over him to score. He could also pass to his team-mates at high speed with great accuracy.
3. Graeme Langlands had a prodigious sidestep off both feet at high speed. He could also pass to his team-mates at high speed with great accuracy.

What is Australia's most popular sport?

Thanks. I have watched all the grand finals since 1964 except for 1976. Good Luck.

Round 21 Talking Points: Broncos loom as Panthers’ main threat, Souths in danger zone, Holmes binning 'massive over-reaction'

Thanks for the link, I’ll watch it later but I did see this :- ‘After no-nonsense Dogs prop Peter Kelly floored Wynn with a punch after a scrum and ended up with a penalty being awarded to his own team, Canterbury kept on grinding.’. I’ll take it up with them.

no one else cares… including Dragons fans
Maybe no one does care but I will tell the truth of the matter as long as I live.
Ten years ago I was lucky that my lymphoma (blood cancer) impacted my bowels so I couldn’t crap and went to my doctor to find out why. I had surgery that resulted in a colostomy bag attached over the stoma from which my bisected colon could eject faecal matter. The chemotherapy saved me from a slow and painful death, as my oncologist put it. There were side effects like a heart attack that interrupted the chemo and my spleen expanded and punched a hole in my stomach that nearly killed me through a dangerous loss of blood. So I had my spleen removed so now I could die if hit by a magpie or bitten by a dog. So I may not live long and probably not long enough to see the Dragons win another premiership.

You’re never going to change my mind regardless of how much “evidence” you produce
I’m interested in the history of Rugby League so I’ll argue with anyone who claims that Canterbury won the 1985 grand final without the help of Arthurson and Quayle’s chosen referee Kevin Roberts.
