Round 27 of the NRL premiership continues this evening when the St George Illawarra Dragons take on the Newcastle Knights at Netstrata Jubliee Stadium in Sydney. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:30pm (AEST).
The Dragons continue to fight, but the points tally doesn’t care about fight and effort unfortunately. They need to find a way to extend their 60 minute efforts into 80 minute performances consistently from 2024, and what better way than to finish off 2023 with a brilliant performance?
Jack De Belin is the headline inclusion as he returns from suspension while Jayden Sullivan could play one last game as a Dragon as he rushes back from a hamstring injury.
I have run out of superlatives to praise the Knights. It’s a phenomenal run that they’re on.
And a lot of credit has to go to Adam O’Brien for knowing that plan A was not working earlier in the season and that Kalyn Ponga had to start at fullback with Tyson Gamble and Jackson Hastings playing in the halves. Ponga is out with an AC joint, with Lachlan Miller named at fullback while Jackson Hastings could make a comeback after being named in the reserves list.
The Dragons want to finish the year on a high. The Knights want to continue their brilliant momentum. It’s definitely going to be a high scoring game which will suit the Dragons.
However, if this becomes an arm wrestle, the Knights will crank it up a gear or two late in the game and run away with ease. I think scenario two is more likely to happen. Knights by 12
