Yep ! He won’t excite the pundits, but he is tough in the trenches and very fit. He doesn’t overplay his hand and gets the ball out to those who can create stuff.

NRL Week 1 finals match-ups: Playoff fixtures LOCKED IN

Yep ! It can be tricky assessing form for future NRL quality stars. I remember Harry Grant after his first match for the Tigers in 2020 ( on loan from the Storm) showing immediately he was a star from game one. He has never looked back and is the QLD and Australia number 9. I remember Wayde Egan winning the NYC hooker of the year in 2017 and I was touting him as the next Cameron Smith . But two years on the NRL with the Panthers and a couple of years with the Warriors he was battling to keep his spot in the NRL. Only last years was a dramatic improvement in his form and this year he has reached the heights of a good NRL number 9. Not a Cam Smith , but a good hooker of NRL quality. But it has taken him 6 years to get here. Who knows if there is more to come from the likes of Luke, Sommerton and Kenny ? Will on be of them bust out as a star ?

100% ! And for Supercoach players he was an absolute cash cow if you got him early on. He finish with the second most highest SC points with 1,841 behind Nicho Hynes(1,900) at an average of 77 points a match . And nobody wanted him at the start of the season ?

Round 27 Talking Points: And then there were eight - the key factors that will make or break finals hopes

Dom Young is a terrific winger . He is both quick and so athletic . He has really improved this season and will be massive hit at the Chooks next year and sad loss for Knights fans.

I think the Broncos have the team to worry the Panthers. You would think they should have the team to beat the Storm , but a record of no wins in their past 15 against the Storm says they need to beat history as much as the Storm team. This game looks to be a monster of a match on Friday night.

“You do need a little bit of luck in this game.” Says the blessed coach who has made the Top 8 with a points differential of -137 !!! Just a 470 point difference off the Panthers (+333).

I thought Badger had a good game . Much better than some of her recent efforts in the Bunker.

'Terrible end to a horrible season': Bulldogs cap off week of drama with insipid display as Titans finish on a high

Think Luke is a bit limited defensively and his dummy half work hasn’t been good. I reckon they will start with Kenny who is a tough defender in the guts and good dummy half, if not limited in attack. Sommerton looks to have more attacking chops and a useful defender, and he might grab the 14 jumper ahead of Luke ?

Cleary is certainly quicker than Cogger and probably the quickest in the Panthers backline over shorter distances. They have no real speedsters in their team, but very adequate as overall back line players. In terms of more attacking solutions, I think they should be scoring more tries through the middle from close positions. Fish, Leota and Smith should be scoring more tries in the red zone from the opportunities presented. Kenny or Sommerton should be serving up balls like Grant does for the Storm pack when close to the line.

But the Knights will need Ponga on the park to progress further. That AC joint will determine the Knights finals chances.

I wouldn’t be giving too many wraps to Kikau, Burton & Mahoney. They have all been particularly underwhelming this season. Kikau missed a lot of the season but has done nothing since returning to the park in recent weeks. Burton has been getting worse as the year has gone on. I would have hooked him last week. And Mahoney is over enthusiastic taking so many wrong options trying to make something happen . All three are missing the support & systems of their previous clubs and are not good enough to lead this new Dogs operation.

'Terrible end to a horrible season': Bulldogs cap off week of drama with insipid display as Titans finish on a high

I think we saw the Panthers solution to playing without Luai on Saturday night against the Cows. Cleary will now be the main running half and Cogger more of link man. Cleary ran the ball 21 times and Cogger 12 . Cogger 3 x try assists , Cleary 1.

I think the Cows were in trouble when Val was suspended. He adds plenty to their performances including confidence.

I think Victor Radley is one most likely to lose his cool.

Yep ! Rugby League supporters are angels compared to the large section of dregs that follow football !

Demetriou may have lost the dressing room, but the Chooks have lost Manu, Tupou & JWH and their right side defence looks pretty dodgy. Cody might be having a big night ?

But then it was played like a typical reserve grade match . Plenty of ball movement but poor defence on both sides. In the end a couple of x-factors in the Storm were the difference ( Paps & Faalogo).

I thought the score actually flattered the Broncos. After their good 12 -0 opening start, I thought the Storm then dominated and could have won by more. Anderson butchered that try stepping on the touch line . Paps couldn’t kick a goal early. And the Broncos were mostly in the game due to the efforts of Sailor and when they had the extra man for 10 minutes. Those Storm x-factor players of Paps & Faalogo were the main difference , and 6 tries to 3 was a fair indication for mine.

Tough one . Whilst Salmon probably has a better running game, I think I would opt for Cogger based on his better all round halves game , including his kicking game. I reckon Cogger might combine better with Cleary too ?

Its been a disappointing season for both these Clubs in 2023. Even the one that gets through tonight , is not likely to progress much further , I don’t think .

Bulldogs need more than a few good men but the truth is club's had years to get a handle on mess they created

Yep ! You have to be in it , to win it ! Once in the finals series you never know what might happen.

NRL Week 1 finals match-ups: Playoff fixtures LOCKED IN

I was always concerned that 2023 might be too much for the Panthers following 3 tough seasons back to back, the World Cup and short off season, and with plenty of the team involved there and in State of Origin this year ? I am hoping that this flat patch isn’t permanent now ? I’m hoping they will be back and firing, although the loss of Luai is a big problem for them as it reduces not only his left edge attacking play but also his combination with Cleary for other options. Cotter has been a good fill in so far, but I think he needs to lift to another level to compensate for the missing Luai in the finals.

Good point ! They definitely need to lift their game for the finals. They have been flat. But do they risk more injury before the finals, or go for the increased momentum now ? I’m thinking they may rest a couple of forwards , but play the majority tomorrow night ?
