My father-in-law has been calling Melbourne for the Spoon since Smith retired… They can’t be killed…

Round 27 Talking Points: And then there were eight - the key factors that will make or break finals hopes

Much better attacking performance from Brisbane. It’s taken a while, but this season, keeping Brigginshaw, Broughton and Maddick in the 7, 6 and 1 respectively has made the team look a lot better. Brigginshaw is slowing down a bit, but Broughton is coming into her own more every week.
That being said, we still don’t look a great defensive unit. Knights and Roosters still the standard.
I don’t think the expansion of the competition has impacted the quality of the games at all. The Tigers aren’t going great, but injuries to your star forwards would do that to any team.

NRLW Round 7: Roosters roast Eels to set up minor premiership joust with Knights, Titans topple Tigers in tight tussle

I recall Karl Lawton got 4 weeks for something I would call similar. Lifted Cam Murray, pretty early in the game, from memory.
No genuine intent, just very poor technique.

ANALYSIS: Cronulla kick clear to seal home final after horror Kris tackle spears Raiders' chances

The last month of football has made me understand why the chooks persisted with Billy Smith. The lad can play.

ANALYSIS: The worst collapse ever? Souths miss finals as Walker powers Chooks to famous win

Nonsense.
We’ve got a fullback who can’t defend, a half back being held together by duct tape, a forward on too much coin, two players in the exit lounge, a disgruntled winger, daddy’s special boy at 9 and a coach appointed purely on a ‘jobs for the boys ‘ basis.
Honestly, it’s a miracle we even get a team on the park… Lucky to be playing finals at all..Only obviously biased refereeing keeps us semi-competitive. No team should fear the Broncos…

ANALYSIS: Reece Lightning strikes Raiders, Kotoni elbows Rapana and chaos reigns in Canberra

Though I can accept that in principle, I think the stats are tiny bit skewed insomuch as the games where Luai has not been available have often coincided with the games Cleary has not been available as well.

ANALYSIS: Luai in serious finals doubt with shoulder injury as Parra pull Penrith's pants down in epic boilover

I thought that any prior criticism of Cleary not playing well behind a beaten pack is well and truly put to bed, now. It was ultimately a losing effort, but the way he stepped up in the second half was obvious to all.

ANALYSIS: Luai in serious finals doubt with shoulder injury as Parra pull Penrith's pants down in epic boilover

The Broncos/Raiders double header is going to be exquisite. Canberra playing with a lot of heart, and Broncos gelling a bit better, but ultimately, in my view, still underachieving. Huge game.

NRLW Preview: Logjam building as just four points split first and ninth with all to play for this weekend

Nice try, Panthers. Don’t you go stealing the underdog tag from the mighty Broncos. I see what you’re doing.. 😛

ANALYSIS: Luai in serious finals doubt with shoulder injury as Parra pull Penrith's pants down in epic boilover

Agree. Tedesco and Edwards oscillate between 8/10 and 10/10 every week.

Latrell doesn’t do that, but he can occasionally hit 11.

Round 26 Team Lists Late Mail: Sharks cop huge blow, Papi close to return after year out, Manly axe Schuster, Raiders trio in doubt

Good news for Rugby League in general that J Campbell didn’t do his ACL. Look forward to seeing him next year under D Hasler.

Round 26 Team Lists Late Mail: Sharks cop huge blow, Papi close to return after year out, Manly axe Schuster, Raiders trio in doubt

For mine, it looks like Souths are playing like they ‘should’ be winning, and are bewildered that they aren’t. A lot like the Broncos last year. It’s like they look up at the scoreboard, see they are 20 behind, and have no clue how it happened or what to do next.

Round 25 Talking Points: Knights turn back clock to glory days, Sharks capable of finals bite, Benji can restore Tigers pride

I think it’s in Rugby Australia’s interest to have as few people as possible invested in the RWC, unfortunately.

World Cup Final rematch to headline Pacific Championships as international RL returns to Australia

At least they’ve got Dane Laurie coming along nicely. Exciting attacking player who genuinely has a crack… Could develop into a very dangerous 6.

Oh. My bad. They’d wanna hope Douehi has a surgeon with Mr Miyagi level healing powers…

Benji taking reins early as Tigers make cut-throat call on Sheens: 'Suggestions about us knifing Tim are demeaning'

What you’ve described is basically the Fox Journalist business plan across the board.

NRL News: Haas' brother arrested on $1m meth charges, TPJ retirement questioned, Taumalolo set for Finals charge

I dunno. The cynic in me thinks it will be more like “The Panthers are heading into finals and playing outstanding footy. It would be unfair to rob the fans of the spectacle of Jerome at this time of year”.

Round 23 judiciary: 'Don't see anything wrong with it' but Burgess faces big ban as Luai, Fotuaika, Brown get feather touch

I also think the Rookie of the year will be hotly contested this year. Turuva, Preston, Tago (is he eligible?), Katoa, Hazelton, Bula, Khan-Peirera, Warbrick (is he eligible?) … Some cracking young players on the rise.

I think for mine, Bula is the sentimental favourite – having a breakout year at FB in a team that is beaten well most weeks is extraordinary. And Tigers need something. Same could be said about young Preston who plays his heart out whatever the scoreboard says. I’m sure I’ve missed heaps of worthy mentions.

Meh naah: This NRL season stuck in the doldrums of post-Origin purgatory

How many of Gallen’s personal record got wiped after his drug ban? It was backdated, so did every game he play, and awards he won get erased for that period?

NRL week 23 preview talking points: Time's running out for finals dreamers, the game heads west and we celebrate some cheating

I think Webster for coach of the year is just about a lay-down misere.
Like you say, his ability to get the best performance out of his charges, no matter the talent level, has been outstanding, no doubt ably assisted by SJ’s red hot year.
The two best coaches in my life time in terms of maximising talent have been Bennett and Bellamy. Here’s hoping Webster continues on this track and joins them in due course.
I do think that if Bennett gets the Dolphins into the 8, he’s at least in the conversation for coach of the year, and all of this overlooks the extraordinary job Ivan Cleary has done with the Panthers – as more than likely to get the minor premiership. In my view, both are on the podium, but Webster gets the chocolates.

Warriors’ surge to finals is biggest surprise since 2005 Tigers premiership run - and Shaun Johnson deserves Dally M

You’re right, that’s a cracking round of footy. Good summation.

Round 22 Talking Points: The three tiers of contenders trying to keep pace with Panthers and Broncos

The English Meteorological Bureau has confirmed that last weeks ‘unjust’ weather system has moved off shore. This is a weather system created by hot air rising quickly, condensing into ‘fairness’ clouds, creating ‘just’ rain in otherwise unfair conditions.
Who knew?

They couldn't... could they? Khawaja-Warner century stand on rained-out fourth day gives Aussies a chance

The dream is on, lads. Another fifty without loss, send in Marsh and Head, and let’s peel off a quick ton, the Smith and Labs to guide us home!

And also a past captain.
Cosmic.

ANALYSIS: Ref tackles, Magic Mam, Herbie goes bananas - and the Broncos all but secure a top two spot

I really hope that we, as a collective, don’t waste this perfect opportunity England have gifted us.
When the Poms are out here for the Ashes next, I’m hoping for a loud, fun, but respectful crowd. None of the boorish antics our blokes have copped this time ’round. Take the high road, people. Nothing would hurt them more.

More sour grapes from England as Ponting pelted by loutish fans during on-field interview

If the Broncos can take this weeks’ first half and couple it with last weeks’ second half, they could go all the way.

Secondly, I thought Mariner had a very good game. Herbie is a massive loss for 24, but Mariner looks the goods. I’m warming up to him.
