Round 26 of the NRL premiership continues this afternoon when the Sydney Roosters take on the Wests Tigers at Allianz Stadium in Sydney. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 5:30pm (AEST).
I will admit it. I’ve been writing off the Roosters for weeks. Their for and against was horrid and surely they would slip again to fall out of contention. However, they have kept on winning and other games have fallen their way.
As it now stands, the Roosters are probably favoured to squeak into the 8. We know they have got a blockbuster next weekend against the Rabbitohs that will determine their fate. But, first, they need to beat the Tigers today.
Their 34-12 win against the Eels last weekend was impressive. The Roosters pack were too strong for the Eels, with James Tedesco and Joseph Manu then taking full advantage. It was a performance akin to what we expected the Roosters to perform like all season long.
In a big change, Sam Walker is back pushing Drew Hutchison to 18th man. Tedesco is out due to concussion protocols with Manu going to fullback and Corey Allan playing in the centres. Jared Waerea-Hargreaves returns from injury with Fletcher Baker back to the bench.
The Tigers have been thereabouts recently and finally ended a 10 game losing streak last weekend with a 24-23 win over the Dolphins. Two moments of magic from Api Koroisau gave Benji Marshall a perfect start as head coach.
Despite their position on the table, there are some “green shoots” with Wests. Jahream Bula is only young but is the type of player the Tigers can build a team around. Stefano Utoikamanu is delivering on his promise. The more experienced heads are finally showing their worth. It’s too late for 2023 but hope springs eternal for 2024.
In team changes, Api Koroisau returns to hooker with Jake Simpkin out due to concussion protocols. Will Smith comes into the halves.
I expect the Tigers to give another good account of themselves today.
However, the Roosters simply have too much to play for and will throw the gauntlet down to both the Rabbitohs and Cowboys. Roosters by 18
