Fiji should be World beaters based on their pool of players and their natural talent. I look at their running action and think “why haven’t they produced an Olympic athlete yet?” Perhaps this could be their year. Thought having Vern Cotter as their coach would be the start of their road to redemption. After all haven’t they got “Divine Intervention” on their side?
They could and should be the mouse that roared!

We can only improve between now and World Cup 2027. As usual free to air medii will not be breathing a soul with this result. Instead the whole World will be seeing how the VFL finals will go.

Well researched. The All Blacks-Springboks game this morning was boring. Reason? Officious refereeing. It was dominated by whistle-happy refereeing. The Springboks deserved to win.

Just how much time is being lost in a game of rugby?

As I predicted. Fiji to surprise. If only they would resort to the passing game. They tried playing for the first twenty minutes “up and unders” instead of utilising their flare. It looked like a game of league. Once they adopted their Sevens game England had no answers. Pity Vern Cotter cut short his tenure as coach. Think they will be a force to reckon. Apart from the SBS I wonder which other free to air channel will be mentioning this historic win? This Rugby World Cup promises no-one and should start over-taking the Women’s soccer in interest instead of this world class game of NRL and VFL.

Well done to the Springboks. Raises a lot of questions. About officious refereeing. Overall a boring game as I think the ref and up-stairs dominated the game. No player deliberately wants to be yellow-carded. None! Remember the daze when Meads and Brownlie were ordered off? Now it is a dime a dozen. Ruining what should be a contest. Instead it is creating more dangers than what was intended. Seven in a pack against eight???

Visiting “Twit” Tasker’s gravesite at Villers-au Bois Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery was a good place to start. It’s now 105 years since that former Wallaby and Newington College protege died of his wounds, buried alongside the Cream of their Nation (only the fit and able could serve). I would think that this is a starting point for inspiration against the French, despite being Allies and sub-mariner defaulters. Lest We ever Forget.

While going back in time and with apologies to all’n sundry for a slight diversion, must pay tribute to one of New Zealand’s great historians and sports journalist Ron Palenski who passed away this week. For a good number of years he not only kept a great Facebook page with numerous yarns on notable sporting achievements including if you hadn’t ever read about it, that Denmark’s Princess Mary’s father once captained Tasmania against the 1968 All Blacks. And if you ever venture to the wild and wet windy southern city of Dunedin such as what the Wallabies last did, in the old railway station in central Dunedin is the New Zealand Sport’s Hall of Fame with all its ephemera and photos carefully compiled by Ron Palenski and with the assistance of his wife Kathy. Having written over 50 books, including the annual NZ Rugby Almanack and let alone newspaper and magazine articles, Ron Palenski’s contribution has been insurmountable. He will be sorely missed.
Now! Back to that Ben Tune try and the presentation of the RWCup by the late Queen Elizabeth in 1999.

Sorry mate but sincerely hope there are no more conversions to Union. We have the talent if only selectors got on a train and looked. None of Jones 2003 converts have done anything to put the rewards from rugby back into the grassroots. Just highly-paid mercenaries. Select the right players and you won’t need coaches with their so-called chalk boards,
Fiji to surprise however rather than the Wallabies. 2027 could be the Wallabies year.

An absolutely thrilling match. But GIRLS! GIRLS! GIRLS! For heavens sake learn to be magnanimous in victory. A great win but celebrate after you’ve shook hands with the losers. Defeat could be around the corner especially come Wednesday. The only one I saw immediately go over to the French to console their defeat was Sam Kerr. That speaks volumes. Egos can get to the best of people when winning especially in this day and age where winning at all costs seems to be to the forefront. It seems we’re no longer taught the virtues of being humble in victory.

They have to gain confidence in playing attacking, risk-taking running rugby. At the moment we’re static. Want to see Cooper and McDermott start.

Fair point. In hindsight we should have taken some penalties. Three points is three points. But the first half we didn’t kick away any possession. We ran it. If you make a mistake however the opposition will make you pay. Some very good forward play particularly this week and last with the lineouts. Scrummaging? Oh dear!

Oh Lord! Trying to buy the hope is like trying to sell rugby to those thugs in NSW and QLD that there is a game played world-wide outside of the VFL and NRL mythological realms of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and that unlike cricket it can receive more that 50000 supporters in comparison to Women’s World soccer if the journos and others would open their eyes and give this Australian team more publicity.
