The world's noticing Australia's football talent - maybe some of our locals should too

I’m from Sydney Chowhound! It’s true the MCG is an oval and isn’t the best stadium for viewing rectangular matches. But huge crowds have enjoyed watching many of the big football clubs that tour Australia at the MCG including Liverpool in 2013, Manchester City v Real Madrid in 2015 and Manchester United in 2022 among others

Record-breaking Matildas have captivated nation, but what comes next?

Hi Waz,
I agree with all of your points.
But the violent hooligans that staged that pitch invasion also affected the A-League Men’s season in terms of crowd numbers, financially, interest from the casual football supporters and so on. There was nothing positive that came from it. The A-League and football in Australia’s image and reputation also suffered. The mainstream media love a negative article about football and they were given a monster one on a platter unfortunately.

Hi Waz,
Your points are all valid.
My point was the damage those violent pitch invaders did to the A-League and football in Australia’s image and reputation. Not to mention crowd numbers, finances and so on. The mainstream media in Australia love anything negative about football and those idiots gave them a front-page story.

Record-breaking Matildas have captivated nation, but what comes next?

Hi Waz,
I understand yours and other fans’ frustration with the APL’s Sydney Grand Finals decision. But the violent actions of those fans that invaded the pitch did massive damage to Australian football and they should be condemned for that.

Australia, NZ, and Japan I mean

This is the Matildas' biggest game yet. Can they hold their nerve?

It will never happen

This is the Matildas' biggest game yet. Can they hold their nerve?

Every country in world football does this when hosting. I remember a few years back the Socceroos had to play their World Cup qualifier in Kunming, a small city in south-western China at altitude where there are no direct flights from Australia and not many international flights at all. Mark Schwarzer’s heroics saved the day for Australia on that occasion.

I think the key will be topping the group and therefore potentially not facing England first up in the Round of 16. If the Tillies can do that then Denmark/China and France in the quarter-final are very winnable games. They then need to beat England in the semi-final and USA in the final. Those last two games will be very tough, but if they can’t do that then they don’t deserve to be champions.
