Loves all live sport. Played rugby codes as a youth, cricket and athletics. Threw away the golf clubs and bought two bikes. Now a gentle road and mountain bike rider and a football fanatic with age. It's so big, we've just got to be part of it. Brisbane Roar member, NQ Cowboys fan.

with those links to former Roar players, they’re building family connections. And there’s more to come, apparently. Matty Smith at the Aus Cup match, the other players you mention being brought on board, these are positive signs. Our female players too, are now on long term contracts, rather than assembling a new team each year. Lots of other new initiatives for the women’s team, not least actioning a list of requests provided to them by the Aiysh Norrie (women’s captain) showing they do listen. They’ve only been there a month, but the new execs are certainly having a positive influence on Roar. The only pity is that the new facility at Brendale won’t be used this season, but the execs made a fair decision not to disrupt the team mid-season and stay at QSAC.

thanks Grem.

Wanderers in the Australia Cup quarter final on 16 September at Perry Park will be an early test. Health issue looks like keeping me away but it will be televised. Go Roar.

It’s not Kaz Patafta’s first club CEO role, but certainly he’s not your average 55 year old CEO about to blunder his way through the next few years, as we’ve seen from a few in the past. All goes seemingly well, results on the park are good and then we find the club is broke and broken, we’ve heard that all too often under managers with a good reputation. Corporate law is a good background, plus financial management, not just footballers. Relationships will matter, not just with fans but with the owners. Their message is that the owner wants a professionally run club. They’ve gotten off to a good start with several initiatives, but time will tell. They have stated several times that the club will be focused on youth and have directed the coach accordingly. RA will be a good fit if your description is correct. He and JA released a lot of good young players during their previous tenure. I doubt he’ll get away with that now, besides he’s already given several youngsters game time.

in an early interview, the new COO Zac Anderson (former A League with Gold Coast and also experienced in business) said that initially he was approached by the owners but he recommended Kaz, suggesting he would be a better fit as COO. The two seem to work well together.

it will be a wonderful season if we get to that
Broncos still drawing over 40K to their games, that’s where we need to be and let’s not kid ourselves, the fans are there. We just need to attract them.

I should add, Corey Brown’s signing is a correction of a past error. Roar management issued a formal apology and reinstated his contract. It will be up to RA if he plays.

I’m just a fan who keeps a close eye on things, no inside info but yes I do think it is a good move despite not minding Redcliffe myself. It’s a positive message to fans, Roar is a Brisbane team. Many fans have been up in arms about Redcliffe from day one and attendance has dropped. The women will play at Ballymore this coming season and the men have one match scheduled there. They want to create a family oriented club and seem pretty keen in the long term, on Ballymore. There’s a few unanswered questions still, about its suitability, and of course FQ (& Roar) are not giving up hope they might get a football stadium in Brisbane one day.

34? that’ll help raise our midfield age average to 25

Kaz Patafta was captain of national youth teams, moved to Benfica as a youngster and returned home, played for Newcastle Jets. He’s from Canberra, has a Law degree and has been in club management for some years. You’ve got to wish him well, the sort of background we need involved in club management.

Thanks Mike, nice to read a positive article about Roar. I wasn’t at yesterday’s game but reports are that a couple of youngsters got some good minutes, Brownlie (another academy lad) impressed in midfield apparently. Time will tell with Ross, the team looks rejuvenated, even the commentators at the Edensor Park match noticed. He’s got them playing forward, scoring goals and still strong defensively with Aldred. A decent visa striker to come but scoring anyway, that’s a good sign. We won’t be at the bottom of the ladder, but your headline’s a bit premature I think.
Off the park we are definitely headed in a new direction. The new chief executives are impressive, a new generation of professional football executives, qualified and experienced. I live in hope that these guys are going to set Roar up for many successful years ahead as a professionally run club. That’s certainly their aim. You can’t expect success on the park unless you’ve got it working properly off the park. Ross Aloisi’s job should be a little easier than his predecessors because of these guys. Many Roar fans are sceptical (or not saying much, waiting for results), but if we play good football, they’ll come back.

estimates I’ve read are between 12-20 % of managers and executives, across the board, are competent. The rest – umm.

Governments are desperate to fund elite sport - and it's leaving the grassroots to wither

Shea Connors is an American who was living/working in Brisbane when they picked her up. All class, she’ll fit well with Vine. Zara’s a kid from Warwick, still growing, one for the future. She’s committed, driving a few hours each way to train last year. Hope they both go well, but not against Roar.

and local council politicians, in my experience, are generally incompetent.

Gabba figures can be misleading as the redevelopment is much more than the Gabba, it’s the precinct.

The reaction to Vine’s penalty against France was … (I don’t have the word)
That game, that crowd, that penalty shootout, that penalty, was absolutely the best moment in Australian sport, ever.
It would be remembered as such, or close it, if it had occurred in Sydney or Melbourne, but as it occurred in Brisbane and our football media is national (read Sydney/Melbourne) we don’t and won’t read or hear much about it.
I attended with an AFL fan and a couple of less than casual sports fans, plus a couple of fanatics. We were all completely captured by the 0-0 game.

Busted stereotypes and a new appreciation for football: AFL and NRL fans react to the FIFA Women's World Cup

disagree about the maroon, I like our historical link with Lions FC orange and maroon is historically the rugby (union & league) color for QLD, not Brisbane. We were Qld Roar when we had maroon on our shirt. If we want to go down that path, the traditional colour for Brisbane teams is white (at least as worn by the rugby league rep side) and the colors on the Brisbane City flag are Blue and Gold. But I’ll support Roar whatever color shirt they wear.
I do get poor management, it’s very common, in business big and small, defence and anywhere with people in control. Use old Jakarta standards in modern Australia, it was always going to be a disaster. I’ve always thought of it as a phase that would pass. Hopefully it has, in one major step which appears to be owner driven which is great news. The signs are good, more than talk I think if you look at the recruiting and other actions (eg. extras for the women’s team, fan engagement, player recruiting). If we do get there the challenge will be to stay there.
We can be pulling 12-15K by season’s end if we play a decent game. Far too early to say yet but we are definitely heading in the right direction. Give us a commentator who knows something about the club and local players.

SFC captain last night, Roar boy, plus the SFC women’s star. Ben Cain’s (former NPLQ coach) Melb Knights progresses with a good win, just like former Roar women’s coach turned MV ALW team around, and Mel Andreatta as Matildas assistant coach, what a humble star. Aloisi recruiting as many Qld youngsters as he can, as are Mariners who had several Qld lads in their champion side and continue to recruit here and establish formal links with SE Qld schools. Jets do too, and Perth Glory for their academy. Another Gold Coast lad on the park last night via Glory academy. Jelacic was a big winner for them, from Roar academy. Borrello doing great for Wanderers as is Halloran at AU. Let’s not forget, as some media tend to, that Roar gave Ange his first big break.
I could go on but knowing who I’m replying, nah, not worth the effort.

I’d say their reaction is typical Mid, for viewers who were skeptical beforehand and believed the stereotype. Interesting observation of the commentary. Our female commentators are great, Ch 10 and P+ should use more of them.

fact check on those crowd numbers
A League W members as of today = 2700 (includes 1500 passes)

Let’s not forget our referees, with Jarred Gillette the only foreign ref in the EPL, and three refs at the WWC (plus assistant refs). They all came through the same system and it wasn’t Melbourne or Sydney. We need to step beyond the mentality of focusing on Sydney and Melbourne (yep, it’s still there). We’ve stepped away from the Qld market, dropping from three teams to one, and still don’t have a commentator from north of the Hunter. We saw what we can do with a national Matildas team. Imagine where we could get to if we adopted a national approach all round. So in my view, and men’s health does matter guys, while the A League is quality and is getting the international recognition it has earned, there’s still a long way to go. Ange is copping a bit of criticism today, he’ll recover but he’s not to be painted as an EPL superman just yet, and we can do a whole lot better, we must do a whole lot better, if we want to grow the game domestically.

do it Mid

Is the suggestion that he would remain national coach? I hope we don’t go that way.
