Just regarding the gate receipts, FIFA being the organiser take all the ticket sales and hospitality revenue from matches.

It's time for football in Australia to grow up and stop being so naĂŻve

If they hadn’t hosted games in Dunedin, Waikato or something larger than AAMI Park then this WC would’ve smashed the record set by China in 2007 of ~32k per game, although their was set playing much less total games. Although with 4 games being played in Homebush (x2), Eden Park and Brisbane we’re likely to finish somewhere close to 30-31k average crowds which is remarkable.

We’ve easily smashed the total attendance record set in Canada 2015.

The Women's World Cup shows Australia’s love of football and our maturity as a nation

Certainly 80k would be a waste, but replacing the gorgeous roof and increasing AAMI Park’s capacity to 50k would be worthwhile.
They have 4 full-time tenants, who in good times I would argue Victory and Storm would warrant an increased capacity. But for all 4 should a home final be hosted they’d utilise a bigger stadium.

Matildas smash ratings records with quarter-final triumph - and there's more to come

The women’s cricket T20 world cup in 2019 had generally pathetic crowds, apart from the final at the MCG which cracked ~90k.
So yeah while Australian’s might love big events, this WWC is an outlier.

'I’ll be supporting whoever plays against Australia': Are people engaging with the Women’s World Cup, or just along for the ride?

Or on the flip side if Ch.7 properly valued the tournament at the time of bidding (or any other FTA network for that matter), they could’ve purchased the full rights and then on sold some matches to a subscription services (Optus, Stan, Paramount, etc).

Anyway I haven’t watched a minute of Ch.7, and it’s got nothing to do with them being the big bad guys, it’s that Optus allows me to watch a game whenever I like, pause, rewind, delayed start, etc.

Remember for anyone with a daughter under 16 to register for their Liberty A League Pass, which allows free entry to all games.

I think if you weren’t interested it would be quite easy to not watch a single minute of the WC, considering Ch.7 only acquired 13 games with the remainder is on Optus.
I know my Dad mentioned over the weekend “I can’t wait until it’s all over” (Dad), “what?” (me), “the soccer, the Matilda ladies” (Dad), “Hahah, c’mon it’s been great!” (me).
He’s a classic Ch.7 watching boomer BTW.

Interesting that Morocco has contributed the teams success down to King Mohommed’s encouragement, not of course the effort and skills of the women on the pitch.
Says a lot…

Dear Tony Gustavsson: are the Matildas succeeding thanks to you, or in spite of you?

A coach’s objective is to make the team better than the sum of its parts.
Frankly I don’t think Gustavsson achieves that. I hope he gets the team far in this WC, but after I think it’s thanks and good luck in a future role, not looking after the Matildas.

Getting to the juicy end now.
It’s likely that Germany will finish 2nd in their group and have to play against France. That means if Australia beat Denmark we’ll come up against the winner of that match.
I reckon Sweden is going to knock out USA in their match, will be plenty of support for that result I suspect

But nothing in that quote implies she is indigenous.
I was born in Australia but that doesn’t make me indigenous.

The Matildas can make history in the biggest game we've seen in years

I knew the way that Canada plays would be more beneficial to Australia compared to the tight defensive units of Nigeria and to a lesser extent Ireland.
We didn’t need the majority of possession, but we relished the space and didn’t have to rely on aimless crossess and long balls because there was ample space, provided we could beat their early press and get into their half.

'Something special about this group': Raso brace seals victory over Olympic champions as Matildas through to round of 16

I reckon a lot of people assume Kerr is indigenous, but she’s not.
But no reason a champion athlete can’t look up to and respect another champion Australian athlete

Not sure what the point of the ‘proud indigenous’ inclusions are here Para?

I don’t think FIFA’s restrictions have anything to do with that, it’s to ensure the pitch is pristine and the interior of the stadium is setup in all the World Cup ‘colours’.
The pitches have looked great because of the lack of traffic and no faded lines from other codes. The very obvious 50 metre and centre circle at the MCG on Saturday night, but even worse was the huge painted eToro on the pitch, that’ll probably still be evident for this weekends round of AFl games!

Yeah I don’t think it’s taken anywhere as seriously as collision sports yet.

It’s only been 5/6 days since the Mary Fowler concussion news broke, but maybe it was a team directive instead of a FIFA one so no official stand down period.
They’ve been pretty secretive about the training and injuries so who knows how bad it was or not.
Anyway, play on, it’s a crunch game 😂

Very true, WC matches would gain the most ranking points so don’t want to waste the opportunity!

Kerr delivers good news to embattled coach for do-or-die World Cup clash

Me too, but she needs some space and support to do her thing. I think Canadas defensive structure (compared to Ireland and Nigeria) will benefit Foords style.

‘And Gustavsson – who seems to be much quicker with a rehearsed soundbite than he ever is at making substitutions – has so far proved incapable of inspiring his team to any great heights.’

Preach 😁 Gustavsson talks the talk but I don’t see much translation onto the field.

I think something in our favour is that Canada aren’t likely to sit deep like Ireland and Nigeria, so will be more open for us in attack and not rely upon as much on constant crosses. While this also means we’ll be more under the pump in defense, I think it’ll at least suit our playing style and tactics.

Hopefully the Canadians have adopted some of Australia’s training techniques and knocked out a couple of players, done some soft tissue injuries, etc.
Would be a great to get a bit of luck back.

Such a choke by the Football Ferns, just needed a draw against Philippines to get a safer passage through. Although Australia’s loss to Nigeria probably trumps that.
The co-costs aren’t pulling their weight!
Luckily the crowds have been awesome so haven’t relied on the hosts for crowds.

Women’s World Cup week 2 power rankings: Canada peaking at the right time?

This is where the excitement all starts to ramp up. While I’d love to see USA get knocked out, they’re also good for interest later in the tournament, where it would be great to see them lose.

Women's World Cup equations: What every team must do to make the KO stages

Some very important details are lacking here…
‘The Matildas must beat Canada to progress, unless they eke out a draw and Nigeria lose to Ireland by enough goals to tilt the goal difference equation in Australia’s favour.’

I believe, correct me if I’m wrong, that if Australia draw with Canada then a win by Ireland by 2 goals or more will be enough. Or if Ireland win by 1 goal then it goes to goals scored and Australia will need to have more total goals than Nigeria
