There was a relentlessly negative article in SMH online written by a “journalist” who had clearly not gone to the game. I expect it was written to appease the paymasters of the site owners, who also own the rights to the NRL, and who wouldn’t be able to replicate an atmosphere like the one on Saturday night.

The rime of the modern Mariners

Good grief; what an oversight. Eds, please fix that up. Apologies to JASON Cummings! (Daniel McBreen must have been in my head!)

The rime of the modern Mariners

It failed to deliver on atmosphere?? Were you there? It was one of the best atmospheres I’ve experienced at any football game, let alone the A-League.

Paramount cock-a-hoop with Grand Final viewership, as A-League clocks up some impressive numbers

Central Coast Mariners are on the East Coast, and if one team constantly suffers from horrendous refereeing inconsistency, it is they.

The Roar's A-League Men tips and predictions: Round 21

In the early 1980s the NSL would play a pre-season tournament, and I remember travelling to Marconi Stadium for a Youth team game which kicked off at 3pm. It was 43 degrees. At half time, there was no team talk; we simply sat on a cool (by comparison) concrete floor and poured cold water over our heads.
NPL competitions in NSW kick off this weekend and the youth leagues start in 2 weeks. It’s going to be really hot. But the demands for more games, at both youth, NPL and A-League level, means an inevitable clash with the hottest months no matter when the competitions start. However, it it utter madness to be dictated by TV requirements. A temperature policy operates for the aforementioned NPL in NSW, which seems to get abandoned at A-League level.

Player welfare abused by A-League scheduling

With respect, Ad-O, whatever your view of what’s cheap or marquee, the A League Grand Final was a point of difference between football and the AFL and NRL. It has been held in every mainland capital, plus Newcastle, in the last 17 years, and prior to Covid, always sold out the stadium it was held in. There was never a clamour from fans for a “neutral” venue and there was already a tradition being established. It’s one thing to mimic the other two codes, but the A League GF was truly “national,” and doubled as a reward for the highest placed teams in the competition.

'Look at me!' Why do some football fans always make it about them?

I take your point and certainly not siding with the mob. But throwing a flare onto a sparsely populated ground – stupid and dangerous as it may be – is inherently less risky than lobbing one back into a crowd.

City keeper may be punished for throwing flare as Victory slapped with show-cause notice over pitch invasion

As a former keeper who had the odd object thrown towards (or at) me at times, I can tell you, my last reaction would be to pick the object up and throw it back at the crowd. This is not to absolve the outright thuggery of what happened next, but at the least, I think Glover has a case to answer.

Players in a variety of professional sports, including football, operate under a code of conduct which includes not inciting a crowd through actions, gestures or words. Yes, “they” threw the flare first and there is no way that anything that follows can condone the behaviour of thugs jumping the fence and attacking a player. But pegging a flare back into a crowded section was not a smart thing to do.

Well, that hasn’t aged well.

The Roar's A-League Men tips and predictions: Round 8

Stuart
I’m not a fan of fan boycotts (no pun intended) but the fans so feel so ignored and – dare I say it – disempowered by this debacle, that they are using the only means they know. I’d prefer big crowds with huge anti-decision banners were unfurled at every game. Remember when the RBB were vilified by Alan Jones and Rebecca Wilson? Their response was brilliant.

The Roar's A-League Men tips and predictions: Round 8

I understand the “need to know the venue further in advance” argument from a logistical and planning perspective. But prior to Covid, every Grand Final sold out regardless of the advance knowledge of venue. Added to that, the finals format changed in 2013 to its current form. Prior to 2013, the GF could only be held in 2 possible locations and this was known prior to the finals commencing, because only teams that finished 1st or 2nd could host it. With the current format, any 3 of the final 4 in the 2nd last week of the finals is a potential host.

The Adelaide schedule is puzzling. The Perth one isn’t. They didn’t have a ground, and their alternative home wasn’t up to speed to host A League games until last week.

I believe AAMI Park is almost sold out on Saturday so that represents a lot more than 9,000.

Of course! But written well before the “hysteria” started…

The A-League has sold its soul to Sydney

Brainstrust
One of the main themes in this decision seemed to be an alignment with the other codes. But the NRL and AFL can choose their GF destination knowing that more than 50% of their league is based in the host cities. So I’m not sure they’ve “souled their soul” as much as they’ve cashed in on a near certainty. there is no such certainty in the A League.

The A-League has sold its soul to Sydney

Well put, Middy. I think there can be two strategies – an “instant” one, and a long-term one, but the latter will involve lobbying for a larger slice of the corporate and governmental pie.
And just more Garang Kuol!

A salute to Australia's 'Platinum Generation'

Jog on, Bruce, you must’ve been watching the North Korean feed of the World Cup.

A salute to Australia's 'Platinum Generation'

You might want to watch that game again, and check the immense relief on the faces of the Argentinians at full time. Or listen to the post-match interview with Emiliano Martinez, who’s save prevented the game going into extra time.

Disagree totally. How does a team look “completely out of place” by beating the world’s 10th ranked nation, and then put the frighteners into the world’s 3rd ranked?

We didn’t “get” the Mariners because the Wolves turned down the AL. The Mariners were in the mix from day one.

What is the best football book ever? (part 2)

A very difficult article well-written, Stuart.
A lot of comment about this being a “minority” and not representative of most Sydney United fans. If one person – ONE – decides that the best way to react to a proud Dharug woman welcoming them to country is to boo and throw a Nazi salute, then that is one too many.
