And yes the Invictus thingy was pretty nauseating . Not realised by many but there was so much ‘ Real Politik’ at play back then ….Mandela got this deserved reputation of course of promoting forgiveness and love and thats the image everyone wants to cherish of him . Less known is that he was first and foremost a very , very hardnosed , calculating politician ..Also the outpouring of support for the Boks more about Mandelas followers taking his lead and instruct than this about turn of love for the despised Boks ..It faded fairly quickly too and they remained disliked for a long time thereafter by the majority ..Took many years for a genuine grassroots shift to start taking place . A shift with real foundations not Hollywood ones . Also Francois Pienaar only liked in Johannesburg .Not very well liked anywhere else …..He got some credit sure but that also didn’t last very long .

I was at that game at Boet Erasmus ..The brawl took place just 15 metres away from me . Full view . How Hennie le Roux survived not getting carded I dont know . Guess the ref thought he couldnt send the whole Bok team off . The whole match was an ugly affair and I blame Canada . They approached game from the get go with belligerence . Also recall stadium lights going out . For a long time too . Just added to the drama.

Im not sure its as simple as match officials succumbing to perfection pressure Geoff but more likely a combination of .. lets call it a certain amount of fear as a result of the critical , often brutal analysis they are subjected to from both fans and media alike allied with the systems that have been imposed on them by WR . Its very tough if not impossible to make instinctive calls . So yes expect delays … Also I’m afraid the tournament will definitely be defined by cards . The die is already cast and requires a whole structural shift for that not to happen and I’m afraid there is no time left for that to happen . But at least in a perverse way that adds to the intrigue .

I listened to the press conference with Erasmus and Nienaber . An interesting response from Erasmus but in Afrikaans to a question posed, so many may have missed it …..He said they have spent a lot of time looking at and analysing Tonga and what they are seeing is scary . !

Impossible not to notice how poorly supported these T20 matches have been despite every attempt by Supersport to give the impression of a full crowd . Kingsmead a small stadium but looked half empty . I hope those in SA Cricket who have downgraded Test cricket believjng the future lies in this very poor imitation format which it appears fans already getting bored with may reconsider .

Theyre just exactly what they were MZ …., Warm ups ..think some are reading waaayy too much into them . All they did was confirm what we already knew anyway namely that the PI teams are not just there to make up the numbers …that England and Australia are undercooked …that the Boks have a potent pack …that Wales are terrible ….that NZ are too reliant on one or two players in the tight five for some grunt …But we knew all that already 😊 .

Says it all.. As a previous EJ fan I’m feeling oddly uncomfortable on his behalf with all his jawing . Also why provide additional motivation to your opposition ? Finally is it only me but by talking a big game isnt that putting his own players under additional and unnecessary pressure ? I Certainly sense that it may just .

Not much one can disagree with here..An interesting dilemma for Boks though . 2 years ago every team in the world would have Cheslin Kolbe in their side with many suggesting he was the best rugby player on the planet , but a horrific run of injuries , have taken their toll . No longer looks as threatening ..But still dangerous and can cut through the most congested defences. So is it the tried and tested experienced Kolbe or the brashness of youth which Kurt-Lee Arendse and Canan Moodie present . Purely on current form ﹰKolbe is behind these two . Unless injured Mapimpi is guaranteed his spot . Kolbe has the benefit of intimate knowledge of French rugby . But it may come down to who coaches think defends best .

Tbe greatest achievemen of SA Rugby post apartheid is not the 3 World Cups ..Sure that leaves a nice feelin for a week or two but anyway quickly fades with the first loss . It has been how the majority of South Africans have embraced the Bokke and rugby as a sport. I live near Thembisa , a sprawling township in Joburg . So white faces are rare . Monday wore my Bok shirt to the mall. Man I was quite the celebrity with shouts of Amaboke Bokke ! Ringing . Black South Africans uninhibited when verbally expressing themselves . Given the history its a sensational achievement by rugby . And it leaves a lasting feel good effect . In the township schools its well documented that rugby is now the fastest growing sport leaving serious challenges to provide coaching and facilities..Rugby is sexy..Rassie more than any single person is responsible for this . Although the 7s team must take credit too.

Agreed . The argument that a player who is less fatigued is more likely to get or cause an injury than a tired player is just total and utter rank BS . It is not supported by research .On the contrary actually . Whats happening is that those with ulterior motives are hiding behind the .” I care about player safety” to add legitimacy to their argument which otherwise would fall flat under proper analysis and scrutiny .

Rassies entire career has been about breaking conventions . Even as a player he started doing different stuff on the field leading sometimes to clashes with his coaches ..His early coaching days he sat on the roof of the stadium with bright flash cards denoting varies plays to the team . Was the first to go to a 6 to 2 bench split which is now commonly used by other sides . Its just how he is and I dont see him stopping now .

An upcoming Lions tour ..Tens of thousands of foreign fans . Stadia will be sold out . Huge money spinner ..Then an upcoming World Cup as hosts …No the future looks bright . Almost a certainty a semi ginal spot this years WC ..Or strong probability ..That doesnt look like a failure to me . Just sort your on field issues out and that I believe is Eddies mandate..Anyway thats how I see it ..doesnt look bleak at all.

I said it here often enough that Fiji , Samoa and Tonga dont have the depth to even make the final let alone win it ..But …They all have at least one great game in them …In each pool they appear they probably will target one top tier team for that win . All the talk about the pool of death and how desparately unlucky Scotland were to have to play the now two top ranked teams in the world but spare a thought for Tonga who have 3 of the top 5 sides in the world to try overcome . Which of those 3 will they target ..I think the opening game of the pool SA vs Scotland will decide it for them .

Also highly recommend Riaan Louw with his Rugby Update .. Very brief , very funny and actually he knows his stuff . Actually Harry and Brett had him on their podcast a while ago . But I’ll check out your recommendation.

I hear you JD ..Actually The Breakdown same culprits is regularly aired here on Supersports channels and for a long time my go to for Kiwi opinion . I dont really know what transpired here as I didn’t see it but already I had long decided better alternatives . For the record Two Cents is more balanced , less click baity and hugely more knowledgeable than the entire Breakdown panel combined..The day Kirwan when news in that SA may leave Superugby his cynical comment . Let them go we better off ..I cut ties . I did not want us to leave and the alternative Celtic Pro 14 at the time no comparison. Cheers to them both .

Well yes and no ..Players pro era much more ripped physically . Obviously ..old days ..my era 😁 ..They had day jobs too. .. but the Laws constantly evolving making it safer to play..Old days it was a free for all , yes punching quite ok .High tackles too .It was a more dangerous sport then than today by miles .

There has always been a bench in rugby . And yes it was intended to replace jnjured players only ..Didnt take coaches long to figure out that if they wished to sub a player he merely had to fake an injury . So yes in the interests of more transparency might as well permit tactical substitutions as they were going happen anyway ..So based on that there’s no going back to the past..The bench is here to stay as is the coaches prerogative which players he wants on the bench ….If anyone wants to evoke ” player safety” smokescreens they really need to come up with evidence or studies etc to support any claims or opinions .

I stopped watching The Breakdown a long time ago. Although I pride myself on hearing opinions from other fans and pundits around the world which of course is what attracted me to The Roar in the first place , I also try accept that there always will be bias and in fact must be if we are to have robust rivalry and debate
.But I found the condescending attitude of both Wilson and Kirwan to be more than I could or wanted to accommodate . So this not only doesn’t surprise me , its a par for the course approach from this programme and a reminder not to bother tuning in for the forseeable future ..

Failing sport ? By what measurement? Globally numbers are on the rise . Womens rugby clearly on the up too. Financially rugby has never been in better shape . Rugby is in rude health right now ..Unless I’m missing something…
