Okay Tony, of course as a pom I’m going to be biased but here we go. Bazball was not just Stokes declaring or bowling Brook, it was England’s innings and going for the boundaries. For recent years, that is revolutionary for test cricket. Bazball has completely transformed England’s fortunes since Root stepped down. Test cricket is dying, that’s undebatable, and yes, Paul went over the top, not one team can save it, but England are making test cricket exciting again. They should be applauded for that, and there’s nothing wrong with how Australia play, that’s just how they play.

Ahhh Buddy, I was going to do an article just like this before you beat me to it. Nice article, I look at it less as a fairytale and more as a good luck story for a town starved of improvement in any sense. Rapunzel should be safe. For now.

Sorry for not replying sooner to you, completely forgot. I was not saying money = quality performance, rather simply agreeing with you that the PL has far more financial might than any other league. Yesterday (Sunday) proved that the Premier League is the most entertaining in the world, Newcastle smashing Spurs 6-1 and West Ham beating relegation rivals Bournemouth 4-0. Not only is the most entertaining, it’s also the most competitive, with basically no mid table, just a European race, and a relegation battle. You say Spanish clubs have dominated the UEL in the past 10 years, but in reality that was one club, Sevilla, and then 1 win from Atletico Madrid. Whilst Spanish clubs might do better than English clubs, England simply has more teams with a chance of doing well internationally.

Just did some research, you’re spot on. A salary cap for leagues 1 and 2 was introduced in August 2020 but withdrawn February 2021. I still expect Wrexham to be in the automatic promotion to play-offs range.

The thing with Wrexham is that of course they have to comply with profit & sustainability rules, but they’re making a lot of money as well as spending it. No in League Two have a reach anywhere near theirs, with a TikTok sponsorship and Disney documentary. That £1.5m salary cap will be an issue though.

My lot Carlisle won back-to-back promotions from National League and League Two back in the early noughties. That was quite a rare feat, I expect Wrexham to be around play-offs, maybe pushing for automatic promotion. We’ll have to see what happens in the summer transfer window, as Garry said.

Ok, I should’ve specified that I was only talking about the Prem. However I do believe the PL is the best league in the world (though not to the level of the NBA or MLB for their sports). As you stated, no other league can boast the financial power of the PL. In the last January transfer window, PL clubs spent £815m, compared to a combined £50m for Serie A and the Bundesliga. Chelsea alone spent more than the other so called ‘top 4’ leagues (Serie A, Bundesliga, La Liga, and Ligue 1) combined. It’s the most watched league in the world, as you also said, but is has more top clubs than any other league. Last year, there was an English club in the UCL final, 2 years ago there were 2. Of course, there are other leagues with quality, but none to the level of the Premier League.

One thing I have to say is that the fans that were there to witness Murray’s victory were absolutely superb. They kept the noise up all through the night. Makes me think no cut-off time wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world.

The problem is that Zakaria’s injury record is that much better than other Chelsea midfielders, and they probably have bigger problems elsewhere, like at striker.

I did find some anomalies when scouring the Internet. There were teams like Tony Pulis’ West Brom who converted a lot more corners than their rivals. There were also examples showing the more goals a team scored from corners, the less goals they scored overall. This is probably because worse teams have to perfect set-pieces as they have few other goal-scoring opportunities.

I think the Saudi move does have an impact on his legacy. It will be a sour ending after looking at his achievements with Manchester United, Real Madrid and (less so) with Juventus.

Has the Saudi move tarnished his legacy? Yes. Has it torn his legacy into shreds? No. This can’t let us forget the incredible achievements of one of the greatest of all time, even if you don’t think he is THE greatest.

I’d be interested in what you think about captains Paul. I think Giannis should be able to take his chance for the East, whilst Jokic and LeBron might still be on top but I’d like to see the new guard come in.

I’m aware the women’s euros wasn’t covered well in Australia but it really reached new heights for the women’s game, you wouldn’t normally see 87,000 people turn up for England v Germany in the men’s game, so it was quite staggering.

Didn’t think I’d be talking about this on Christmas Day but here we are! I would argue that the French wanted Versailles to be a lot harsher than the English and Americans wanted. The French were hurt the most, it was their soil the war had been fought on, but Lloyd George and President Wilson were less demanding. Still, I agree that all three countries were too harsh, and the treaty was a direct cause of WW2.
