When the men reached the round of 16 in Qatar, they did it with a squad mainly of past and present players of the A League.
The APL should’ve shouted that message out loud in the public domain. Instead they signed off on a three year Sydney grand final deal.
At a time where we could’ve recognized the efforts of the Socceroos and appreciate the A League, it was replaced with anger from fans, thanks to the poor decision from the APL.
Football in this country unfortunately loves to shoot itself in the foot from time to time.

The world's noticing Australia's football talent - maybe some of our locals should too

Congratulations to Spain. They were wonderful to watch. Certainly have the skillset and intelligence in abundance. As for England, they never gave up, but I always felt they were second best throughout.

As for the Matildas, we can say that Tony G didn’t do enough as far as squad rotations are concerned. But in reality, the squad depth is not quite there. If Australia is going to win a world cup one day, then it needs to have two quality players for every position. In other words, it needs two Sam Kerr’s, two Mary Fowler’s etc. The second xi has to be just as good as the first xi.

The good news is there will be increased participation amongst the girls post world cup. To harness the new emerging numbers and talent, we need our coaches to be educated so they could spot talent, develop players and be smart tactically.

Of course, we do need facilities to be improved and football uniforms to cater for the girls specifically.

Once again congrats to Spain. And sadly, this wonderful event is over, where nearly 31,000 people on average per game turned up to watch the best ever women’s world cup.

It's time for football in Australia to grow up and stop being so naĂ¯ve

Proud of the girls. I hope it inspires a young generation. Feel flat right now, but you have to acknowledge that England were just too good.
Go Spain!

Sam missile strikes with World Cup worldie but Matildas bow out as Lionesses roar into Final

With this talk of a public holiday, are the politicians trying to jinx the Matildas? It’s not even the final. And even if the Matildas do the remarkable by winning the damn thing, a public holiday is just a waste.

People can go to work, and an employer could organize a long lunch so they could celebrate it there and then.

But next year, there will be a lot of young girls, and boys as well, be interested in taking up the sport. But will grassroots have the facilities to match the demand? That’s what politicians should be looking at, not public holidays

Albo can stick his public holiday - funding Australian football fairly is a far better idea

I’m having a long week at work, and at times, it haa been full on. But after tonights result, the Matildas gave me huge lift in terms of spirit and joy. Very proud.

As for Suncorp, it’s not happy hunting ground for any team dressed in blue.

The Great Vine: Cortnee fires Matildas through to first ever semi-final after epic shootout win over France

One thing that shouldn’t be underestimated is that the Matildas did the job in normal time. There was no need for extra time. No need for an extra 30 mins plus.

Foord Fiesta! Caitlin and Raso fire Matildas into quarter finals as Kerr makes long-awaited return

Matildas have a good side. But just like any team, injuries can hurt. Fowler was also absent against Nigeria. And the result wasn’t a pretty one.

Foord Fiesta! Caitlin and Raso fire Matildas into quarter finals as Kerr makes long-awaited return

What an unbelievable performance from the ladies. A 4-0 win in a do or die game against the Olympic champions and they did it without their best player.
There was so much pressure leading into the game. With this result, it’s a huge sigh of relief for the tournament itself. With NZ out, there had to be at least one host that is still alive in the event. The Matildas have avoided disaster, and now it looks like a team that could go deep into the tournament. Let’s hope so anyway.

'Something special about this group': Raso brace seals victory over Olympic champions as Matildas through to round of 16

Those guys are not ready yet. Maybe in two to three years. In the meantime, someone like Bancroft could replace Warner with immediate effect. Bancroft may not be the type of player to average well over 40, but he might do just enough until someone else is legit ready for the baggy green.

Picking young players for the sake of is not the answer.

Why Australia need to start regenerating ageing Test team now before it’s too late

Considering their small population, West Indies did very well for a long time. Could Major League Cricket help out the West Indies?
South Africa does have the population to come back as a force, but just requires the right amount of good resources in terms of revenue and administration. Meanwhile Pakistan has recently returned home to play test cricket. A country like Bangladesh may finally come through. So not all is lost.
But cricket administrators need to improve on how to juggle the three different forms of the game. That is crickets biggest challenge.

Why Australia need to start regenerating ageing Test team now before it’s too late

You never know, Australia could pull it off. Kinda wished this opening stand occurred in the first dig. Heading into the final day of the series, and all three modes of a result are still alive.

They couldn't... could they? Khawaja-Warner century stand on rained-out fourth day gives Aussies a chance

I’m pretty confident Australia will regenerate it’s bowling attack over the next few years. Will Sutherland had a breakout season for Victoria. Morris and Richardson could be others to come through, as long as they are both are fit and firing. And of course, by the end of the next shield season, we could be talking about other fast bowlers for test consideration.

Lets not forget, Cummins is still only 30, and still young enough to play in the next away Ashes in 2027. While Murphy is an exciting heir apparent to Lyon. We should be alright with the bowling attack.

Why Australia need to start regenerating ageing Test team now before it’s too late

I’d say the injury to Nathan Lyon had a big impact on the series. He took 8 wickets in the first test. And since his injury in the second test, Australia’s attack has looked vulnerable. Plus Murphy hasn’t received the full backing from his captain, and wasn’t picked at Old Trafford. Which is a pity because Murphy is a very good prospect. And has taken five wickets in this match.

As for Bazball, the jury is still out. It is still in it’s infancy, but sooner or later, England will come up against a captain that has far better plans to counter against it, then what Cummins had to offer, which was bugger all in terms of tactics.

Aussies Bazballed again as Root, Bairstow and Crawley power England towards series-levelling win

They should’ve “unshackle the shoulders” in the first innings. Khawaja and Labuschagne did the complete opposite.

Aussies Bazballed again as Root, Bairstow and Crawley power England towards series-levelling win

Probably should’ve said in my post “hypothetically if Tubby was 25 or 30 years younger”.

Aussies Bazballed again as Root, Bairstow and Crawley power England towards series-levelling win

Disappointing end to the series. Australia is not going to chase them. It needed to be under 300 to have a chance. The last two days have been horrible. On day 2, Australia was too slow with the bat. They only scored 230 odd runs in the entire day. If they scored over 300, the lead could’ve been closer to 100.

As for yesterday, the less said about it, the better. Say in a far fetched hypothetical sense, a Mark Taylor replaces David Warner at the top of the order, and was captain, then Australia would’ve won the Ashes quite easily.

Obviously there would be more attacking fields, he would know how to use the bowlers, and in particular the less established like Green and Murphy. He would also have a gut feel, and he might have given someone like Labuschagne an extended bowl. He was the best Australian captain I’ve ever seen

Ponting and Clarke would also do a good job too. But unfortunately Cummins is not a captain. And maybe a fast bowler shouldn’t be captain. So who is the next choice?

Aussies Bazballed again as Root, Bairstow and Crawley power England towards series-levelling win

And i remember some of the battles from past between bowler and batsman, where neither wants to get an inch. Some examples:

*Atherton v Donald
*Donald v Waugh brothers
*Ambrose v S. Waugh
*Morkel v Clarke

Test cricket is at it’s best where there is a one on one battle going on.

Run out drama erupts as controversial Smith escape, Murphy cameo earns Aussies unlikely lead

So do I. He was quite impressive in India.

Warner loss sours Aussie comeback as Starc inspires England collapse despite drops aplenty

Great to see Murphy in the side. England were going alright at 3/184, then Murphy stepped in, getting rid of Ali, and broke the century plus partnership of Ali and Brook.
He broke another partnership with dismissing Wood. Murphy was also the most economical of all the bowlers.
He has bowled 15 overs and has taken 3 wickets so far in the series. Geez, he might’ve stopped the momentum that England enjoyed at Old Trafford. If Cummins backs Murphy, “Hot Todd” could do some damage.

Warner loss sours Aussie comeback as Starc inspires England collapse despite drops aplenty

I know that he has copped his critics over the years, but gee, Australia has missed Nathan Lyon in the last 2 and a half tests. Since his injury, in the last four bowling innings, Australia has only bowled 9.3 overs of frontline spin.

So picking Murphy in the next test is paramount. He looks like he will be the heir apparent to Lyon, and is a great prospect.

Ashes Fifth Test teams: Better late than Neser, Murphy in the mix, Warner looks safe again, Anderson under pressure

The incident occurred more than five years ago now. If Warner does “spill the beans”, then it will come down to “he said, she said”.
If I was Warner, I would declare The Oval test to be my last test.

Ashes Fifth Test teams: Better late than Neser, Murphy in the mix, Warner looks safe again, Anderson under pressure

Well ten years ago, in another Manchester Test at Old Trafford, the match was drawn with England at 3/37 chasing 332, Days 4 and 5 were also rain interrupted. England were 2-0 up at the time, which meant they retained the series, following their success in Australia back in 2010/11.
Ten years later, at the very same ground, it is Australia who benefits from the rain. Swings and roundabouts. Although one could argue that the team who was behind on both occasions could’ve got out of it with a couple of big partnerships.

Weather they like it or not, England only have themselves to blame for Australia being raining Ashes champs

I only saw a bit of the game as I was working. But when I heard the news about Kerr, I was gutted. And how was the team going to react without her?
Reading by the comments, and just seeing a small portion of it, Australia will be grateful to get off the mark, beating 22nd ranked Ireland. They did look nervous.
Next game is against 40th ranked Nigeria. Hopefully the Matildas are better from the hit out. As for Kerr, if Australia does make it to the round of 16, and is not needed against seventh ranked Canada, then she could be right for the 7th of August.

Catley penalty saves Matildas' blushes in front of record crowd as Kerr to miss Nigeria clash

The Olympics will survive for two reasons. Firstly, the whole world competes at the event. And secondly, if it becomes too expensive for countries to host it, then just leave it at Athens every four years.

With the Commonwealth Games, the future is uncertain. Perhaps it has run it’s race. But Victoria opting out to host the CG, just 15 months after winning the bid is embarrassing and basically humiliated our country across the world.

Luckily we have the Women’s World Cup beginning tomorrow, and therefore get some credibility back.

RIP, Commonwealth Games: a relic of an Imperial past no longer relevant on the global sporting landscape

I haven’t commented on the cricket tab for a while. However after reading the news about AB, I just want to wish him all the best. As a kid, I started following cricket when he was captain. As a player, Border was tough as nails, and he is not going to give up that easily to Parkinson’s.

And you never know what happens with medicine in the future. Suffice to say, the medical fraternity has learnt alot from producing the Covid vaccine, and who knows, it could lead to other breakthroughs in other diseases like Parkinsons.
